P17 shots?

I got my second p17 injection today and have a question for those of you who also get them.  There was a big difference in the actual administration of the injection between the first and second time and I'm just curious about everyone else's experiences.  The first time the nurse had me put one foot on a stool and injected it almost near my hip. She took a loooong time to complete the injection- felt like it was over a minute.  Later I was definitely felt it.  Today I had a different nurse.  She I injected  it in my (ahem) flesh and took no longer than it takes to get a immunization shot. It was over before it began. I cannot even tell I got one today.  I am certainly not a nurse and I don't want to question their knowledge, but this is also very important to me and if I'm going to do this every week I want to make sure it's effective.  Just looking for others opinions and experiences if you're willing to share. Thanks!

Re: P17 shots?

  • Haven't started my P17 shots yet, but I've had plenty of PIO shots and had the same experience years back with my depo injections. One nurse said it would hurt less near my hip...BS! Different nurses just haven't different ways of doing it....neither place was wrong but there is more muscle the closer to your hip you get. I usually aim for upper outside quadrant along the inner bikini/underwear line with PIO.

  • I just finished getting mine -- no 2 shots were ever the same -- even when given by the same nurse 2 weeks in a row.  Some weeks would hurt, some would itch, some would do both.

Some were given higher, some were done lower, some were more to the hip, and some were more to the spine.  I think the only thing that was consistent was that they alternated which side they were given on.  I also think they could tell where the previous shots were (I had lumps from the shots that lingered for a couple weeks before going away) and so they tried to vary the locations.

    Ditto all of this.

  • I am about 14 shots in at this point and have always had the same nurse administer it, which isn't incredibly helpful for you, except that it is different week to week.  She gives it in the same quadrant (they may a triangle between your hip and something else to ensure correct placement in the muscle) and she always takes about 45 seconds because it has to be administered in a Z or something.  At the end of the day, some hurt, some don't.  The drug is very thick, so I would think it would hurt every time, but it doesn't always.  Maybe there is a nurse on here that can better describe the actual administration.  By the way, I am always laying down for it.  If it does hurt after, I use a cold compress for 10 mins or so.

  • Because p17 is an oil-base the injection should be given over a minute or so to reduce site reactions. It should also be administered in the upper gluteal muscle for best absorption. I've had 6 so far and they are slightly different as I've had 2 different nurses administer them. My injection site seems to be more sore if the shot is given too quickly.
