Trying to Get Pregnant

Progesterone results- 7 is normal?

So I hadnt heard from my OBGYN after my progesterone test last week. I called today and the receptionist called me back to say they were normal. The level was 7. Now, I ended up going on day 6 after O instead of day 7, but isnt 7 low? Shouldnt it be over 10?

My LP is around 9-10 days and that is why I was being tested. I have been charting and always show a good temp shift that correlates with my OPKs so it seems that I am ovulating, but this is discouraging to me. If I should be treated for low progesterone and she says that is normal, I feel like I will never get pregnant.

BTW- this is a new doctor after my regular GYN didnt want to test me and recommended I do not chart and just give it another year (we are at 7 months trying right now, with 7 consistent months of a LP 8-10 days).

Re: Progesterone results- 7 is normal?

  • I've always heard that they like to see your progesterone at at least 10. I would call and ask if the OBGYN could call me back.
  • Loading the player...
  • Totally lurking... but just thought I would share.  I had my progesterone tested in almost your exact situation- 8th cycle of trying, with consistent 9-10 day LPs.  It came back as 7 as well, which I thought was low, since everything says it should be at least 10 at 7 DPO.  My OB/GYN said it was normal and I didn't need any treatment.

As it turns out, I was pregnant at the time and got a BFP 3 days after the progesterone test.  So basically, I can only assume that those tests are pretty unreliable.  Progesterone levels are pulsatile, meaning they change drastically throughout the day.  A low reading could just be a 'dip' at the moment your blood was drawn.  Maybe this is why so many OB's are reluctant to test for it unless there is an obvious problem?  IDK but good luck with everything!

  • After a doctor signs off on labs and considers them normal they can give results over the phone. Ive never not been able to get my results if I wanted them.

The test was 6 days after O instead of 7 just because of when I was scheduled and I O'd a day later than normal, but was told day 6-8 was OK.

cece- thanks for that! I wish that was my case and I was pregnant, but AF showed up right on time at day 9 post O...its just frustrating since when I read symptoms of low progesterone I have every single one of them and always have, just never knew it was a problem :(

  • Hmm I guess I have no idea what the issue is. When I call my doctor and ask for my labs to be faxed to me, they send them to me. If a doctor tells the person the labs are normal and they call and relay that info, I dont see any problem with that and many offices do that. She didnt interpret the results, she told me the doctor said they were normal and asked her to relay that info. Since its my labs, I feel I have a right to know the number, so I appreciate an office that shares that with me.

And yes, I know low progesterone doesnt mean LPD. I had day 3 blood work and an u/s done and all were normal, which is great. I was just worried this was too low.

  • I can see your problem from here:

You're impatient and using an OB instead of an RE.

  • Um no - Im not impatient. I was referred to a new OB because of a known issue. You dont see a RE before 1 year of trying  if you have no known issues. My charts all show a short LP of 8-10 days after 7 months. When there is a known issue, you shouldnt wait a year to even discuss this with your OBGYN just because. So she did preliminary testing and if anything was off would refer me to a specialist.

Hence, why I said you shouldn't be getting tested by someone who doesn't know what the results mean.

  • I had my progesterone test done and my levels were at .4 and my OB said they like to see them between 810. I pray things work out for you because I know how you feel.
  • I have heard they are looking for 10 on unmedicated and 15 for medicated.

However, on my medicated bfp cycle my progesterone was 8.3 at 7 dpo.

  • Thanks Gemini & Chicago

Chicago- were you able to carry your baby to term with the lower progesterone?

Yep. He's one year old now. My progesterone was 8.3 at 7 dpo, but at 12 dpo, it was in the 20s.
