First Word

I've seen several of you post that your kids have said words and actually meant them, so what was your kid's first word? What else can they appropriately say?

Micah can say a whole mess of words, but he doesn't know what almost all of them mean, so they don't count. The only thing he actually says at the appropriate time (which is very frequently) is "Uh oh." I feel like that's a bad omen.

Re: First Word

  • DD does say da-da.. But she does not know the meaning yet, I am sure. She does a lot of babbling nothing specific....

I know with my previous kids they were closer to 12 months before I could recognize actually words...

  • My DD has lots of words, but she only knows the meaning to about 5 of them.   LOL at the bad omen of uh-oh.

DD says and knows meanings of mama, dada, bye bye (buh-buh), uh-oh ;) baba (bottle) nana (for her nana), ma (more) ki ka (kitty cats- we have 3!) and ba (ball)

Oh! We had "Buh buh" (bye bye) for a day and a half. Now he forgets it.

  • DD definitely knows dada and will say duck when she's in her duck tub and playing with her rubber duckies. Also makes a k sound when she sees our cats. She says mama but I'm not convinced she talking about me when she says it.

  • DS will say mama, but only when he wants me; dada, on occasion; bubu, for bottle; and ababa, for Abby (DD).

I think mama was his first.

  • Rob says Bye-Bye and he will point to his dad and say Da-Da and will crawl to me saying Ma-Ma.  He will also say "Itzy" -- he actually is meaning "Mitzy" -- the name of my mom's cat -- and look out the door for her.

  • DS says "DaDa" and definitely knows who he's talking about; he lights up when DH gets home from work! That was his first word. "Mom" [not Mama!?] was his second, and he knows he's calling for me. (Or he says it in a questioning tone when I use a stern voice to tell him not to do something. haha.) He says "Whoa!" which is hilarious to hear; it's when he's excited about something. He's starting to say "Hi", and I think starting to get what it means, but he's not consistent with it. He says "Oh!", but that seems pretty random too. He's also beginning to say "nunununununun" when he's frustrated/angry/doesn't want to do something, which I take as a very bad sign that he definitely knows the meaning of the word "no" and it will be coming along shortly, to be used often by my little stubborn-headed boy! lol.

  • he said "mama" just a few days before he turned 10 months...he meant me because he was reaching for me crying to save him from his brother lol He also said "mam mam" (kind of like we say nom noms for food but in Greek) that same day and he said it during meal time because I was not feeding him fast enough.  A couple days later he said Baba (dada in Greek) but hubby was not around, so not sure if he meant daddy. DS2 said mama as his first word too but very early....6 1/2-7 months. DD also said mama first, but I can't remember when...need to look in her book

  • DS has been saying MaMaMa for a while. I thought he was just babbling but my mom swears that he focuses in on me when he says it, or he says it when he's upset. He also says ball "BA!" and when you ask him where his ball is he can find it and show it to you.

  • I knew this post was going to make me feel like Micah is behind! Are you guys doing anything to help them with language development? I tr to show him what words mean, but he has no interest in sitting still or looking at what I'm pointing to. He'd rather destroy things on the coffee table or eat carpet lint. The last thing on his mind is where his nose and tummy are. He picked up his only word at daycare!

  • My DD really doesn't say anything except mama and dada and then babbles incessantly but can't really tell if she is saying real words. Mama and Dada are the only words she says with knowing what they mean too.  She does understand commands, etc but doesn't say words.  For example I say "up" and she puts her arms up so I can pick her up.  I say bye bye or hi to her and she waves.  She has a toy that has a mailbox attached to it and I tell her to "go get the mail" and she goes right to the toy house and opens the mailbox to take the fake mail out LOL.  So I know she is understanding lots but speaking not so much.

  • Mine can say more (in spanish as we are a bilingual family) and no. She actually will hold up her pointer finger and look at DS and shake the finger and say "nononononono" :)

    Uh oh

    Papa

    All done

To be fair, he has constant stimulation from 2 big siblings and I think that has helped a lot  And, in the end, it doesn't really matter.  I don't think DD was talking this much at this age, but by 18 mos she was speaking in sentences.  DS barely talked until 3 y/o, but then spoke perfectly.

  • My son has no real words yet, 10.5 months old!  He babbles a lot, and grunts, but I've never been able to say for sure that he meant daddy when he says da da da or if ba ba ba means ball, or bottle, or whatever.  I'm amazed to see how many LOs his age are already communicating with words.  Can't wait!!
  • Just Uhoh in our house. Dadadadada when he's happy and Mamamamamamama when he's angry/upset.

     LOL. Hilarious!

We do baby signs with DD.  She babbles a ton, but really only knows a handful of words.  The ones she does say, she is actually able to discriminate meaning: Da-da (for daddy, obviously), ka (for our cat), Aga (for our dog- argus), & hi.  She has not said mama yet and it is killing me! Oh, and she does say "all done-" seriously clear as day- when she chooses to say it.  It is very bizarre.
