How big is your hospital bag?

Mobile: How big is your hospital bag?

I have been getting things together to pack for the hospital. Initially I thought of just bringing one of those carry-on suitcases, but it doesn't seem big enough. I'm having a c-section so I'll be spending 3 days in the hospital, so I was thinking of bringing a bigger suitcase, that way we could put everything in one bag, including a pillow for me, snacks, entertainment... I'm just wondering if I'm overpacking. What kind of bag are you bringing?

Re: How big is your hospital bag?

  • I used a carryone rolling bag for DS#1.  Honestly, I used hardly anything in the bad and was overpacked with supplies that never were even thought about.  I will carry the same this time- with just a lot less stuff inside so that I have room to carry home all of the stuff from the hospital.

  • Mine is the size of a back pack. It will have changes of underwear, one comfy outfit, baby's going home outfit, and toiletries. Minimal is better with this one; trust me.
  • I have the abundance boxy bag from PPB. Its our diaper bag. I have all of my clothes and toiletries in it as well as stuff for the babies. DH has a school sized backpack full of clothes and snacks.
    That's all we're packing.

Our hospital has a queen sized bed for you and H to share once in pp so we also packed the boppy loungers so we can have them sit on the bed with us instead of sitting in the rolling cart.

  • I will have a backpack packed and ready to go in the car in the next week or 2, with just the absolute basics. In case I go into labour while out and about. It will also include back massage thingy, and a few things I may need/want during labour.

My hospital bag is just a samll, carry on sized suitcase. One of those rolling ones. I plan to go natural so hopefully won't be gone long. Maybe only one night. I will pack 2 pairs pants, 2 or 3 shirts, a sweater, a tank top nursing bras, socks, under wear, a book, going home outfit for baby (blanket and other going home stuff will be with the carseat to grab later). My hospital provides everything while there for baby, including outfits diapers, wipes, etc. Now that I type that I will have to try remember a pacifier as my hospital no longer provides that. Camera, cell phone, list of family and friend phone numbers, chargers/extra batteries. I think that is all

  • I will use a small duffel bag, like the kind you'd bring to the gym.  It will hold a going home outfit for me (jersey maternity dress, nursing bra & flip flops) & for baby (sleep n play & hat), 2 nursing tanks, 1 pair of loose yoga pants, 1 maternity hoodie & a couple pairs of ratty underwear (just in case the hosp doesn't provide the mesh ones anymore).  A handful of travel size toiletries for me & MH.  Phone, ipad & related chargers.  MH will go home to shower & change, so I won't really need stuff for him other than a toothbrush.

  • I'm thinking our large duffel bag will work for mine and SO's things. I'm planning on bringing the diaper bag for LO's things.

  • Oh.  I feel kind of ridiculous.  Between my terry cloth robe and My Brest Friend alone, that necessitates a huge duffel bag.

Eh, whatever.  I'd rather have it and not need it than the other way around.

  • Small duffle for us. I'll put the nursing pillow in the car, but DH can go get it sometime after the baby comes.  I don't need it immediately.  In fact, most of it can probably stay in the car until after DD is born.

  • I have a large duffel from VB for both myself and baby.  DH will be going home at points while I am in the hospital so if i forgot anything he can always bring it over in another bag as needed.

  • Carry on rolling suitcase plus my pillow (which won't fit in the suitcase). If it doesn't fit in there, it isn't coming.

  • I've packed a backpack (the small string kind). It holds a couple pairs of yoga pants, 3 nursing tanks, underthings, baby's coming home outfit w/ blanket and toiletries.  I'm not picky about pillows, etc. and I'd probably forget it if I brought my own. Other than a new toothbrush for H that I included, he's on his own. We'll be fine.

  • We are taking a carry on suitcase and it will hold all three of our things.    DH is bringing a pair of shorts and 2 undies and 2 shirts, I'm bringing 2 pajama sets, socks, undies and slippers and only a handful of supplies since they give almost everything there in the hospital.  Also, 2 outfits and a blanket for baby.  I'll carry my purse which has my mini makeupbag and brush and stuff in it and then I'll probably pack a few snacks in my purse like granola bars or something, but our hospital has decent food and snack machines everywhere if I really need something.

Oh and our camera and ipad and chargers will be in the suitcase too.

I'm going to throw a pillow in the car but not bring it in unless I have to.

This exactly.  The hospital sends you home with stuff for a sitz bath, xlarge pads, tucks wipes, etc. etc.  I need the room more for all that stuff rather than anything that I am bringing.

But a blanket, pillow, and boppy are still musts for me.  It's so cold in the hospital!!  And uncomfortable.  Don't forget flip flops for the shower!! :)

  • I'm bringing our suitcase that is one size bigger than our carry on, along with a diaper bag. I'm going to keep the baby essentials in the diaper bag, then everything else in the suitcase.

  • I'm using a rolling carry-on suitcase and DH is bringing a duffel bag.  I'm also have a C-section, so I'll be in the hospital for 3 days.  I've packed a robe, nursing PJs, an outfit to go home in, a nursing bra, coming home outfits for each baby (in preemie and newborn sizes), toiletries, snacks, and our DSLR camera.  I added a reusable bag to bring all the goodies home from the hospital and some pacis, just in case.  I hate their pillows, so I'm bringing my own pillow.  I also am bringing my double nursing pillow so I can attempt to tandem feed with a LC present.  For entertainment I'll probably just bring my iPad.

  • I'm still packing mine, but I'm using a small soft bag about the size of a backpack. It's just large enough to carry some toiletries (I'm picky) and some clothing items, plus the cord donation kit once that comes in the mail. I'm planning on just wearing the hospital gown and such, so I packed pretty light; plus, I figure if I really must have something I forgot to bring, I can send DH or someone home to get it.

Baby's stuff is going in the diaper bag once that comes in the mail; all those diaper and wipe samples I've accumulated are being saved for this purpose!

  • I have two tote bags. One is a larger overnight size tote bag that will have all my clothing items, and one additional tote that is smaller for random stuff like phone chargers, ipad and cosmetic bag.

I just packed my diaper bag for my DD and will do the same this time for this baby.

I will say I WAY over packed with my DD for the hospital and I won't be doing that again. The hospital provides diapers, pads, dispoable undies (they're great!) onesies and blankets for the baby. And anything else you can think of that you'll need. I wore hospital gowns the whole time with a pair of my own comfy pants - it's messy after delivery and you really won't want to mess up your own stuff.

  • I'm using a Vera Bradley duffle that I usually use as my carry on when I fly.  It's going to have two pair of yoga pants, a couple nursing tanks, a hooded sweatshirt (but an additional one in our car incase this one gets dirty), flip flops, fuzzy socks for labor, toiletries, a deck of cards, baby's take home outfit, a blanket, and possibly a boppy.

We have our birthing center tour next week, so I'm hoping to adjust as necessary after that.

  • I'm bringing a large rolling suitcase but I'm putting the boppy inside, so that takes up a lot of room
