So I'll be 42 weeks on Thursday and risk out of my homebirth. I'm starting to worry about the transfer of care to the hospital. If I end up having to go there to be induced it's going to be a nightmare, because I haven't seen a back-up OB. I'm going to end up with whatever OB is on call and I'm pretty sure they are going to put me through the ringer since my MWs don't do standard prenatal testing. After my last homebirth I had to go to the hospital nursery for the PKU and the nurses there were total witches to me about the whole situation.
Anyways, I'm fully prepared to put up a fight and still have some semblence of a positive, natural birth experience, but I also assume that there will be things out of my control since I will be going there for an induction. My fear is that I will end up with an emergency c/s.
I am trying to put together a short birth plan to have ready in case I do need it. I'm thinking more about what I want to happen to the baby - no eye drops, delayed clamping, etc. When it comes to me I can roll with the punches and refuse what I want to.
If you were in my position - headed to the hospital for an induction after planning a HB, what would you think is important to include in your birth plan?
Re: HBers - transfer to hospital questions
Off the top of my head, I think I would put something about cervical checks and monitoring. I would want those as little as possible. Basically I'd still want to be left alone to allow things to progress as intervention free as labor can during an induction.
As for baby, I'd just make a chart with a yes column and no column and list the procedures under each.
If anything else comes to me soon, I'll let you know.
I'll definitely be thinking positive thoughts for you today!
I'd also mention wanting a double layer of stitches in the event of a section, since I'm sure you'll want to VBAC/HBAC more babes, but I so hope it doesn't come to that for you.
Will your midwives come with you as doulas if you have to go?
I'm sorry you're possibly facing this. I so hope you go into labor before then! I'd be discouraged too.
Things in our hospital birth plan included the following for baby:
Mom plans to breastfeed baby & would like to do so immediately after birth, please do not offer a pacifier or any bottles at any time during our stay, including formula & glucose water.
We do not consent to the following:
- CIRCUMCISION
- Vitamin K shot
- Hepatitis B vaccine
- erythromycin treatment in the eyes
I had some lines for a c/s since that would have been the most likely reason I would have transferred from my homebirth labor.
