When to crib?

At what point did you let them sleep in their cribs? If you didn't from the start do you wish you had? What did they sleep in before they were in cribs? Was the transition to cribs difficult?

Sorry so many questions! I know all babies are different but I'm just trying to get an idea of what to expect. We got double angelcare monitors for our cribs and I'm curious if I should expect to use them soon after they get here or not. As in should we unpack them and set them up now? TIA!

Re: When to crib?

  • We spent the girls' first week of life out of our house as a result of Hurricane Sandy. During that time, they slept in a pack n play in the same room with us (we spent time with my parents, then with his) out of necessity.

Once we got home, though, they were in their cribs. Our room is not really big enough to fit a PnP comfortably and the nursery is right across the hall. And honestly, we never considered doing it differently.

We never had the Angelcare monitors, but we did use the video monitor from day one. (well, day 1 in our own house...) We have the Summer Infant one with the touchscreen; you can swivel the camera from the monitor. We get a bird's-eye view of both cribs that way.

  • We had good intentions and had them in the cribs right away, but then found that it was much easier to soothe two at a time with them in Rock'n'Plays. We ended up splitting up the night with one of us sleeping on the couch next to the R'nPs (and caring for babies as needed) while the other got uninterrupted sleep in the bedroom. I think we transitioned to cribs around 3 months old. It was no problem.

We just had a normal baby monitor, not video or Angelcare, so I can't speak to that.

  • We tried a PnP with DS1 and he hated it and only slept in his swing in our room for the first 3 months, then we moved him to the crib and it was a hard transition.  DS2 was in a bassinet and I loved it and he did really well in it.  I moved him to a crib around 4 months with absolutely no problem.  Our plan is to put one crib in our room and have both babies in that crib (possibly with a divider if they start moving around bothering each other during the night) until around 3-4 months.  Then we will move them to their own room in separate cribs.  Clearly if they don't do well in it we will have to figure out if they sleep better in a swing or whatever, but as of now that's our plan.

  • We put ours in their own cribs from the first night home on and, with the exception of a few bad nights, they have been just fine sleeping there. I'm probably in the minority here with that system but it just so happened to work for LOs so we got lucky I guess. You can always try one thing and adjust to what works for you, YH and LOs.

  • Our girls were 8 weeks early, and they were sooo tiny that I was uncomfortable with them being far away from me for awhile.  We kept them in a crib in our room for the first 9 weeks.  At 9 weeks, they went upstairs.  I decided to go ahead and get them into their own cribs.  It was also at that time they started stretching their sleep out to about 8-10 hour nights.  By 10 weeks, they were sleeping 12-hour nights.

My thought on sleeping is - how do you envision your children to sleep?  Whatever that vision is, start them on it.  Why make a bunch of different (and what appears to be stressful) transitions before they are 1?

My girls are no less loved, because they slept in cribs early on.  If anything, we skipped stressful transitions.  They have always known how to sleep in their own beds, which what I envisioned for them.

Good luck!  You will do great, I know.  :)

  • Our babies slept in rnp for 4 months. They slept great in them. I don't regret it. If I had it to do over again, I would still keep them in the rnp for night time sleep, but nap them in their cribs during the day. One baby was easy to transition into the crib, the other wasn't.
