SIL called me FAT

I need to vent...

I've had my fair share of issues with my sister in law since I married her brother almost 2 years ago. She can be the nicest person, and she is really good to a lot of people, but she seems to have an issue with me. It used to be full on verbal assaults and attempts to control me through intimidation, but now its just snide comments because husband told her enough was enough.
So now that we are at the very least civil, she still takes opportunities to make jabs at me...which I usually brush off in person but when I go to bed and lay my head down on my pillow, I cant help but cry and feel awful.

Now for the fat comment. Yesterday we were hanging out with her cousin in the kitchen when we started talking about dresses for her upcoming nuptials. I was pretty happy because I finally found one for myself. At some point the conversation turned around to weight gain and I told them about how I said one day to a friend that I dont want to gain too much weight and my friend said "youre not fat you are pregnant!!!"  and I laughed. Well my sister in law quipped with, "you werent fat before but now you are."

It made me feel like total s***. I laughed it off and said "yes but with a purpose."

Ugh....I have no idea what to do with this girl. Im just happy the verbal assaults (full on swearing and making threats) have stopped.

  • Your SIL is an ugly biitch. Spend less time with her and more time listening to this

  • Is she personally lashing out at you alone?

My brother and dad both have always made inappropriate comments to me including weight gain, but I've learned to just brush it off since they are unable to understand the social parameters of what is and isn't acceptable to say to people.

"I stammered, unable to form a coherent thought because I have a vagina."

  • You should probably not hang out with your SIL anymore.

  • I would let your H know what his sister is saying to you and limit your contact with her to only family gatherings that you have to attend.  I am sorry she is so horrible to you.

    I vote for this

"I stammered, unable to form a coherent thought because I have a vagina."

  • This sounds like a good time to make a clean break with her. There's no place in life for crazies. We don't like crazies here in South Beach.

    Or there's the c'unt kicking.

  • DH knows and he made me feel really good. He also said if she does it again I should call her out on it which I will.

I don't hang out with her by choice. I was shopping with her and my MIL for a dress for her wedding. We stopped by her aunts house to pick up some things.

She's always been pretty nasty but thankfully ever since DH stood up for me it's not at the same level it used to be. She's a volatile person who is used to getting her way, I think I ruffle her feathers because I dont do everything her way.

A lot of people suggest that to me but I am not the person that can cut ties with someone that my hubby's family loves. They are very close nit. My hubby and his parents are very good to me. I just have to find other ways to deal with her but cutting her off completely is not an option.

Then calling her out in front of everyone when she does this stuff is your best bet.  If you make her look like an a$$hole a few times she will probably stop targeting you.

    That was totally by choice.

Actually it wasn't. My mother in law and I planned a shopping trip with eachother because she needed a dress too. My sister in law decided to tag along with her mom. I didn't find out I'd be shopping with her until she showed up in the dress shop.

I think that that's what I'll have to do.

I love my husbands parents and have a great relationship with them. They make an effort to keep peace in the family. However at the end of the day, my SIL and I are adults and I can't expect anyone to do anything for me. DH did his part. I'll just have to call her out on her stupid comments in the future.

Thanks for all the posts and Especially for the funny ones :

I'd tell her to choke on a bag of diicks.

  • Stupid b!tch said what?

I'm normally not one to feed the trolls, but I'd have had to say something mean as sh!t right back to her.

  • Wow, what a gem. Sounds like she wears jealousy on her sleeve.
  • I don't understand what she could possibly be jealous about. She's getting everything she ever wanted in terms of her fairytale wedding and all that.
I never understood her hostility towards me when she is so nice to everyone else.

I doth believe that, if she is as close to your husband as you say, she may be jealous that you took her place as his best friend.  She is probably unaware of said jealousy.  Just angry.

Have you tried to converse with her on the topic of your ill treatment?

I have and it was disastrous. I have taken a different approach after her last attack. Her brother reigned her in and told her he will cut her off if she has another outburst. He isn't the type to make empty threats so she seems to have taken him seriously. Most of what she does now is snide comments or some inconsiderate behavior. When she acts that way I give her the cold shoulder and do my own thing.

For example, her fat comment lost her my help in preparing her wedding stuff. Last night I went to have coffee with grandma and she was fixing her things. I didn't lift a finger which I am sure drove her nuts. In other words I take a step back and treat her with indifference. Maybe I did the wrong thing but when I am nice to her even after she is rude she seems to get worse so when I take a step back she follows and does the same.
