Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Dumb question re: starting cereal

I dont remember from when DD started, what do you mix with the cereal? Water or formula if you are FF? DD hated cereal so we gave up on it, but figured I'd give it a shot with DS when he turns four months next week ;)

People usually use breastmilk or formula, honestly, though, more and more people are just skipping it all together and going straight to real food closer to 6 months.

Is there a reason you want to start right at 4 months? The majority of kids aren't really ready then nor do they need it.

i was thinking of skipping the cereal, I know DD hated it. I started DD at four months wit fruit and veggies and she did fine. I was going to start DS because has a huge appetite, eats over 40 oz a day and is 20 lbs. Lately he has been staring as we eat and even opens his mouth when we raise spoons to our mouths. It  just seems he really wants to try.  His four month appointment is on Monday and I plan to discuss with pedi. I figure I could try, it doesn't go well, no big deal and will just try again later. I wasn't going to try hoping it would make him STTN or anything ;)

  • LOL, doesn't it make you feel awful as they watch you eat?! Sometimes I entertain him with one of his little toys so my LO doesn't stare at me. :) He's 4 and half months. I started him on rice cereal a month ago because he has a really big appetite. :)
  • We mixed breastmilk...since LO is breastfeeding, but that would be the equivalent to formula instead of water. I think it makes the cereal a little sweeter...

Is there a reason you feel like you need to start your son on it if your daughter didn't like it? There really is no need to give a baby cereal, and certainly no reason to do so right at 4 months...

i guess because my daughter is horribly picky now and I want to make sure I let him try lots of different things....

  • I would use formula, not water.

  • I started LO on oatmeal at 4 mos.  He was doing the same.  Staring at us, opening his mouth, leaning towards us and reaching for our food.  He absolutely loved the oatmeal.  I used his formula to mix with it.  I have used water once and he didn't act any differently so...He just started on some fruits and vegetables.  So far he has loved everything we have given him.  Even pears, but they gave him bad gas, so no more pears for now.  Good luck hope your LO likes it.

I personally don't think starting rice cereal at 4 months will help or prevent that. I BLWed my oldest, and she is an awesome eater. NO cereal ever. And we didn't start until 6 months. Just... something to think about.

Oh I know, I didn't think the ge we start had anything to do with being picky, I just figured I shouldn't avoid a food just because I am afraid he wouldn't like it like I did with DD.

  • When DS started cereal we mixed it with breastmilk. I think it gives it a little more taste plus they get the nutrients of the BM/formula.

  • I mixed it with formula.
