1st Trimester
if you only get an US at 20 wks...
then how do they know everything is okay? I made my fist appt for Jan 8th (my dec 8th appt got canceled) and they said the first appt wasnt even going to be an internal exam- just talking. well, Jan 8th will be I day before 10 wks for me. I am scared that something will be wrong and they wont know...
I guess this is what they go to OB/GYN school for

they may try to listen for the h/b at that point. ?if you opt to do any of the genetic testing (like for down's) you will get an u/s at 12 or 13w depending on how you schedule it. ?otherwise, you would just have to wait until the 20w u/s.
if they don't try for the h/b at your 10w appointment, they will try at all subsequent appointments from that. ?i think we were able to hear our baby's h/b at 9w... so you should be fine. ?and if you have any spotting between now and then, they will probably require you to come in as well.?
That is the day of my 1st appointment too! I would have also felt better with lab work, early ultrasound, etc but the truth is if something is wrong there really is nothing you can do about it.
They will probably schedule your exam after that appointment and then they will be able to hear baby's heartbeat. If they can't then you will probably get an ultrasound.
I'm just trying to relax and enjoy knowing that I am pregnant. It has taken us a long time to get this way!

It is normal to worry, but try not to. they will generaly give you a PG test when you pee in a cup when you come in as well as test the urine for glucose and stuff.?
At 10 weeks they may try for a heartbeat with a doppler. With this PG they got a HB on a doppler AT MY 10 week apt. with my first it was not until 13weeks.

thanks, I am just scared b/c I asked them if DH should come to this one, and they said no. I told them that I and he both want him to be there if there is an US or listening to HB, and they said this will be just talking. I just dont want them to be like, "okay, let's check this out..." and DH miss it

Unless you have a reason to think something is wrong (bleeding/cramping) you'll probably just have to wait. Even if something was wrong, there isn't anything they can do this early, unfortunately. If you feel between now and then that something is wrong, call your doc and try to get in earlier.

They'll listen for the h/b at every appt. after the first one (possibly even after the second one) and measure your fundus and ask you how you are feeling. But with an absence of cramping or bleeding, you are to assume that everything is progressing normally.
My first appt with DD was at 12 weeks. It was just talking with a nurse. I didn't even meet with the dr. My DH did not attend, and I'm glad he didn't as it would have been a waste of his time. At 13 weeks we met with the dr. for the first time where they did an internal and listened for the heartbeat. Since they couldn't find the heartbeat at 13 weeks, they did an u/s. My DH did come to this 2nd appt and I was glad.
I got felt up at my first appointment, and that was it, well other than urine and blood tests.
Next appointment, I'll be 12ish weeks and they're going to try to hear the heartbeat, and then will do that for all of the subsequent appointments.
I was going to do the n/t scan, but my insurance requires pre-authorization. With no medical need to get it, I can't get pre-auth'd.

Do you have a choice of practices? I'm not suggesting that your current OB is being unreasonable, but if you're unhappy you can certainly switch. Cancelling an appointment and not rescheduling for a month would be a red flag for me. I understand cancellations happen, but you're paying the doctor and if you're unhappy maybe you should shop around. I don't know what your insurance situation is so it might not be possible, just a thought.
My very first appointment was family history, peeing in a cup, my weight/height...but since they weren't busy she tried to listen for a heartbeat too. But if they said not to bother having him there, they must not even try, or maybe they don't realize how far along you are?? Did they ask you about your LMP?
Most first visits are like this...and while I know it can be scary, they know what they're doing. You'll get to listen to the heartbeat at every visit from then on (usually every 4 weeks)....and they take a urine sample too to make sure your system is ok. I wouldn't worry unless you have really bad cramps and/or spotting more than normal (they say soaking through a whole pad). Time flies...believe me, I never thought it would for me.

I actually got the call about the appt cancellation and decided that was the last straw with that office, so I called a different one. because of my work schedule and me not wanting work to know yet, Jan 8th was the earliest they can see me (I'm going on my lunch break). I did tell them that LMP started on halloween (I said the date, lol)
