Toddlers: 24 Months+

Worried mom

Hi all! I'm from the 6-9 months board and I was wondering if you all could help me out. My LO is 8.5 months old and isn't really babbling. He says ah, ei, ha....  no ba ma pa, etc.   He is a quiet baby.  Did any of you have this happen with your LO and if so did they have any future problems?

Re: Worried mom

  • My son was a very late talker. Used very few words at even 18 months. We had multiple speech evals and multiple hearing screenings. All were fine. He just turned 3 and now talks up a storm. The only problems we had was between 18 24 he was very frustrated because he couldn't communicate his needs. We taught him sign language while continuing to work on speech, that helped a ton.

  • My son wasn't a big babbler. He had lots of vowel sounds and was capable of consonant sounds. He just didn't make and repeat them often. His pediatrician was not concerned so I didn't think much of it.

I became concerned once again when my son was about 15 months and had a handful of words but only said Dada and doggy regularly. Again, the pediatrician was not concerned but wanted to touch base when he was 18 months. By that point I was very concerned because he just didn't seem to be acquiring words and he also did not parrot me ever. He had about 10 words at that point, and because he had no other deficits, his pediatrician remained unconcerned but told me about Early Intervention.

My son still only had about a dozen words at 22 months so I had him evaluated. He was diagnosed with a small speech delay and began to work with a speech therapist twice a month. After 6 months he met all his goals so we devised more goals for the following 6 months. He met them all in 2 weeks!

At that point he was right on target so he no longer qualified for services. He is now newly 3 and has an incredible vocabulary. He speaks in full sentences and every couple of months I notice big strides in his grasp of language. At this point I am concerned with his clarity so I will be addressing that issue in the near future.

In my experience, I recommend bringing up your concerns with the pediatrician but also listen to your gut. Part of me thinks my son was probably just a late talker and would be at exactly this point even without EI, but I have no regrets using their services. Just being proactive made me feel so much better immediately. Good luck!
  • Thanks so much for your input. It's so nice to hear from other moms who have been through similar experiences. I think it's also so important to listen to your gut. Sometimes I'm afraid I'm being too much of a worry wort though and my instincts are thrown off by my anxiety haha. I'm definitely going to bring it up at our 9 month appointment and ask for a hearing test just to make sure. I think it's better to be proactive like you ladies than to just sit back and wait for things to happen :-) again thank you!!
  • Yes. My son didn't babble at all until he was probably 9 months. He started saying his first words at 1 and is now speaking in full sentences (at 2!) Try not to worry. Late babbling doesn't mean anything.
