I wanted to use my annual exam as a chance to check out possible providers for the next pregnancy. There's a hospital-based midwife practice in the area with a 96.4% vaginal birth rate, 86% of whom deliver without an epidural. They also have the highest vbac rate, even when compared to home birth midwives. Sounds great, so I wanted to see if it checked out in person.
OMG, it was the best medical appointment I've ever had in my life. She had me recount the details of my first labor, listened, asked questions, and then concluded that I made good decisions, my c-section was indeed necessary (why hadn't my own midwife confirmed this for me and let me wonder for the last 1+ year?!), and that I am a great VBAC candidate. This past year, I kept wondering and the midwives who did attend my birth were really discouraging and kept implying that if I only tried harder then my baby would come out faster - I feel so much more at peace knowing that I transferred the hospital with good reason, I accepted the c-section with good reason, and the lesions on my daughter's legs when they pulled her out confirm that something very dangerous could have happened had I made different decisions. It all sounds so logical now but having the midwife who witnessed your birth conclude that you should have just tried harder can mess with the mind.
I feel so lucky to live in this area where I have access to this option. The high success rate is the most important factor, but they also have wireless monitoring, birthing tubs, don't routinely put in IVs, etc. Yesterday, the idea of getting pregnant again made me nervous, now I kind of can't wait.
Re: Best midwife consult ever
Yay!!
I'm not going to lie, but being comfortable with my providers was huge in my VBAC. I felt so much less stressed. And I knew it from the first appt. So happy for you!
