for those who freeze baby food

sub: for those who freeze baby food

i'm looking to make batches of baby food, freeze them in trays and then dump the trays into a freezer bag for storage (so i can reuse the trays).

my question is, if you are doing this, what type of trays are you using?  are just straight up ice cube trays okay or do you recommend paying more for the baby food specific ones?  they baby food specific ones seem like a gimic to me.  do you think the frozen food will come out cleanly from an ice cube tray?

thanks!

Re: for those who freeze baby food

  • I have the munchkin containers and stuff comes out so easy. I have used a regular ice cube tray, it worked fine but it was a little more challenging to get them out. The silicone trays might work better though.

  • I bought some on amazon for like $4 per tray. They work alright, wish I had invested in the silicone trays though. Pay attention to what size each cube freezes to! Mine are 3/4 of an oz each.
  • I use regular ice cube trays. The food comes evenly. When DD1 got older and eating more I used mini muffin tins.

  • I have the Beaba silicone ones. They were a gift. I probably would have cheaped out and gotten something else, but they really are worth the $. I'd recommend finding a regular silicone ice cube tray with a cover.
  • I really like the silicone ones I have. The cubes are super easy to pop out and they have lids so the food isn't just sitting exposed in the freezer.

  • I have these that I love (sorry I can't seem to make clicky in Chrome):

And then I have these silicone one that I hate (and these are more like 2oz portions, not 1oz):

  • thanks everyone!

i just ordered a set of the one that grins said she liked and then a generic version of the beaba silicone ones.  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B2G6OQA/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

the silicone ones aren't prime eligible.  i ordered two and the shipping was almost as much as the trays...even still, the total for two was about what it would cost me for one of the beaba ones.  i'll give you the review once i've used them.

  • I bought these trays:

     https://www.amazon.com/Mumi-Bubi-Starter-Compact-Recipes/dp/B004A9ZF3Y

They are essentially glorified ice cube trays, but they don't have some of the gross stuff in them that goes along with cheap plastic containers, and I like that they have lids and store in the freezer more easily than ice cube trays.

They have worked well for us so far.

  • I froze food in silicone muffin pans once... SO hard to get out.  I don't know if the ice cube trays work better somehow, but I'm never doing that again.

I use regular ice cube trays & they are just fine.  My dad got me some "fancy" ones with lids for Christmas (b/c I asked for them), but I don't even like them as much as my old random ones.  The lids mean you can't overfill the cubes AT ALL, and they don't hold much that way.

  • I just use some silicone ice cube trays someone got us for our wedding. The food comes out super easy. I think they have them at bed bath and beyond.

  • My silicone one that is from baby bullet is amazing. It's so easy to pop them out and large size so no need to pull out multiple cubes. I've never tried my normal trays though.

  • So do you have to cover the ice cube trays? Probably a dumb question but I'm looking for cheap ways to freeze food too!

You don't have to if you aren't using them for storage, but just to freeze.  You can cover them with shrink wrap and then once they're frozen, move them over to freezer bags.  I bought the ones made for baby food/with covers because I didn't want to risk them being knocked over in the freezer in the process and make a mess (that kind of stuff happens to me lol), plus they're safer plastic than just regular ice cube trays (though I don't worry about that stuff a whole lot to be honest).

  • I used the cheapest ice cube trays from Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

It's a bit challenging to get the food out, but it comes out just fine.  The cubes are in tact.

  • Love my OXO trays from Bed, Bath, Beyond! They have a lid that slides on so you don't have to wrap it in anything. Also, BPA free if you're concerned about that.
