Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Carter's clothing....sizing weird?

My daughter will be 8 weeks on Thursday.  She's a fairly trim baby (even though she eats like a horse!) but is very long.  3 month sleepers from Carters fit fine, except that she can't straighten her legs.

Some of her 3 month sleepers still fit ok (she can straighten out her legs) but I feel like I've put almost all of them away for being too short.  6mo sizes are too big all the way around.

Is there a children's clothing brand you like, due to its sizing being consistent?

Our little Samosa arrives in January!

Re: Carter's clothing....sizing weird?

  • I have found that Carter's is the best brand for my DS. He is also pretty long -- he's definitely longer than he is wide -- so their onesies seem to fit him the best. I had the same issue with the sleepers though. I find that the Circo brand sleepers fit him the best. The 3 month size is a little baggy b/c he isn't fat enough, but they're the only ones that are long enough. The Gerber brand sleepers are really wide and short so they don't work at all.

  • I find that sleepers are the worst for sizing, mostly because of the legs. Even my "average" length baby goes up in sleepers faster than anything. If I were you, I'd just move up to the next size (6m) even though they're a bit big elsewhere.

For all other things, especially onesies, I find that Carters is actually the best for sizing.

  • Carter's is the only brand of any clothes that currently fits my little peanut. Granted, she was born 4 1/2 weeks early.

  • Carter's is the best for my LO...Gerber is terrible, I'll never buy another piece of Gerber clothing. Circo brand (Target) also seems to be pretty decent.

  • Carter's always seemed to run small for us, we had to get the next size up in anything we liked, but DD1 was also in the 90th percentile for weight and 75th for height. I like Old Navy more than any other brand, they are cute and not too expensive.

  • Carters makes some sleepers without feet. You could just use socks to cover her feet.

  • With DD, who was very long/tall for her age starting at birth, I didn't do footed pjs for a long time.  Instead I used footless pjs and socks if needed.  As she got around to walking our house is all hard wood and it made sense to keep on doing footless pjs so I don't think she started wearing the footed kind 'till she was probably around 2yrs old!

DS is very average in height and has been able to wear footed pjs all along.  He can also seem to walk just fine in them without slipping all over the way his sister did.

I find Carters to be pretty well sized.  Gerber on the other hand runs ridiculously undersized!

  • DD is long and lean as well and so far Carter's is the only brand that fits really. I have noticed that my zipper sleepers seem to be shorter on her than the snap ones, and the cotton ones more so than the terry ones. And, Carter's from Target vs. "real" Carter's have shorter legs, wider waist and shorter sleeves too. So weird.

  • I have had the most luck with Gymboree sleep and plays with my skinny long DD. Just today I went through and pulled all the sleepers that are too short and the only ones she has left to wear are Gymboree.
  • I know for DS Carters has always been my favorite.  Their clothes tend to be more on the long and lean side.  Some brands, like Children's Place comes to mind, don't work for him at all because they're so wide.  By the time he's not swimming in them everything is too short!  He was always spot on with Carters sizing.

  • Thanks, all!

Didn't realize the Carters brand from Target ran differently....but after investigating a few 3mo sleepers we received from actual Carters  v. Target, the difference is completely noticeable.

My long baby and I appreciate the input!

  • Carter's clothing seems to fit our DS the best. He is rather long, so many of the footed sleepers irritate him to no end. We purchased more of the footless ones for him and just place socks on him if it is cold.

While Old Navy's clothes are adorable and reasonably priced, I have found that they stretch horribly. Not a big fan right now!

  • My aunt bought LO some footless pjs from Hannah Anderson, and the were VERY long and thin.
