1 Standard Sized Crib and 1 Mini Crib - Weird?

We still have DD's crib from 5 years ago. The model is no longer made. I found a mini crib with a similar color and style that seems to go well with our existing crib. Would it be odd for one baby to use the standard size and one to use a mini crib? They will be sharing a room. It's not a huge room so the extra floor space would be nice....I just feel funny trying to choose which baby gets which crib.

  • Have you considered selling the standard one and using the money to put toward another mini/two minis?

  • We can't sell our crib because it is drop sided. I know they recommendation is not to use them but we had no problems with our daughter at all. The model we have was never recalled but as a whole they are now outlawed. It is very likely that we will just buy 2 mini's and throw out the old one. We have other furniture that matches the existing crib - changing table/dresser and glider so I thought we might just keep the old crib since we'd want to find a new crib that matched the other furniture.

  • Hmm ... yeah, I admit I would feel weird about doing that. I would do two standard or two minis.

Could you sell it if it's converted to a toddler bed? I'm sure you'd get less for it but maybe something.

  • we bought one cheap plain crib from CL for the boys and the other was a hand me down gift, and it's a really nice fancy crib that I never would have bought first hand. At first I felt weird putting one baby in the plain cheap one and the other in the nice one. But they both fit in the room so I said, they won't know the difference and used them. I let DD pick who got which one so I didn't play favorites. (she did-which meant one twin got all her hand me down pink stuff because it was her favorite at the time too).

I would keep the mini, go with what you have and don't worry too much about it. If they end up in therapy one day it won't be because of this. ;)

  • Actually, the exact scenario is what we have. One standard size and one mini crib. They both shared the standard size crib until about 4 months old. Then we knew we needed 2 cribs, but didn't have the money to buy 2 new, even 2 new of the mini cribs. And we didn't have the space for 2 standard size cribs any how. Since the standard size was a hand-me down, we went with what I guess is a "weird" configuration and bought a mini. Either way, I've never felt odd, or off, or weird about having DS in the larger crib and DD in the mini. DS has been taller since birth so we went with the obvious choice and put DD the "smaller" twin in the mini. I guess I'll pay for therapy when she's 30 if this causes her issues in the future. But I kind of doubt it.

  • We have a crib with matching dresser and changing table from DD and a friend is going to give us her crib as she's done with it.  They don't match at all, one is light maple and the other is dark brown, but I don't want to spend the $$ for a matching crib.  For some reason, my mom is really bothered by this and wants me to get a matching crib, but I just don't care that much. :)

Ours don't match at all either. :) I guess it depends on how long you plan to use the cribs, too, and what you'll do after. We used cribs till 3y5m, which worked great for us but probably would not have worked with a mini crib in the mix. The cribs are now both converted to toddler beds.

  • We have a crib from my older son, and are looking to buy another too for our twins coming this summer.  I don't care if they don't match.  With all of the other cute stuff in the room, we won't even notice that the cribs are different.  I never thought of the mini crib idea though, now you have me thinking maybe we should get one instead of a regular sized one.  How long can a child stay in a mini crib??
