Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Adding another meal.

When did you introduce a 3rd meal to your LO?

Currently my DD gets breakfast (2 tbsp of cereal and 2-3 tbsp of fruit) and dinner (3-4 tbsp of meat and veggies). She is drinking less and less formula (20 to 25oz a day) despite my and drs best efforts to keep it up and she is really enjoying solids.... cleans her plate every time.

She is a few days from 8 months and I am having trouble deciding to either increase her solids and provide a wider range of food, or keeping it as is to promote more formula, which so far hasn't worked. I am trying to keep formula as our main source of nutrition until 1.

Just wondering what you ladies think or what your experiences are. TIA!

  • We were definitely at three servings by six months. I feel like my little one spends less time nursing now, but he eats three solid meals plus snacks a day, and our pedi says that is perfectly fine.

  • I introduced solids at 6months and after two weeks introduced a 2nd meal per my Baby Bullet book. I say keep the formula and two meals. They say babies get all their nutrition from breast milk/formula so the food is less important before 1

  • I just started to give her 3 meals. For breakfast she gets toast. For lunch she gets a puree veg plus finger food (veggie, pasta, cheese). For dinner she gets a puree veg and some finger food. She loves her food but is not nursing as well and I would rather her nurse and get that as her main source versus purees.

  • LO is BF, at 6 our month appointment pedi said to start solids (I started on our own around 5 months). We give him 2 meals a day. Pedi said that around 8 or 9 months LO will most likely seem to favor solids more so its ok to add a 3rd meal then. Since starting solids LO did drop a nursing session but BM is still most of his diet. I think its ok as long as your LO is still drinking the appropriate amount of formula too.
  • I currently BF with some supplementation and for the longest DS only had one meal and some snacks.  He was interested in our food but would mostly play with it when we gave it to him.  This has changed over the last week or so so last week after his 9 month appt we added 2 meals and 2 solid snacks.  DS is on the small side weight in at just under 17 lbs.  Pedi wasn't overly concerned about his size but said we should up his food intake. She also said that we should start doing food first and liquids second since he's 9 months. Before it was liquids first, then solids.

  • We started her on solids at 6 mths. But slowly. She just now is eating like a piggy. She only has 2 meals but we offer she some snacks throughout the day. She eats about 4 ozs for each meal. Rice cereal with fruit in the morning and veggies for dinner. She still nurses a lot during the day, once or twice at night. They say breastmilk/formula is the best for them right now. But our daughter is on the small scale, so I don't mind giving her as much as she'll eat.

  • I plan on starting a third solids "meal" at around 7 months. My LO is a big eater and is up to about 6 ounces of breastmilk/formula every 4 hours. He eats 2 pretty good sized amounts of solids in a sitting so this third meal will be a smaller one just to get him used to eating more solids.
