Is this acid reflux?

DD (4 wks old) keeps having these episodes where, an hour or two after eating, she will spit up, arch her back and act like she is in pain. Sometimes spit up will come out of her nose, and it lasts for several minutes. She is fine while eating, and like I said this doesn't happen until hours later. It doesn't sound like typical reflux symptoms but I don't know what else it would be? I hate to just throw meds at her (which the pedi is willing to do) but I also hate to see her in pain :(

Re: Is this acid reflux?

  • The arching the back and painful spitting def sounds like reflux. My son did the same thing. He's now on zantac and although he still spits up a little, it's no longer painful for him. But it is interesting that the spitting up happens hours after eating for your child.

  • DD had reflux too and she would do the same thing where hours later she would get super fussy and spit up. Pedi put her on Zantac, used it twice a day every day for about 5 weeks then weened her down and she is no longer on it and doing great!

  • This sounds exactly like my DD. she is going to be a month old tomorrow and we started Zantac 3 days ago. My dr said that it would take about a week to work, but I can already tell a difference today. She still has some episodes of arching her back and spitting up, but it's less frequent and less severe already.

Other things you can do is to burp frequently, I burp every 5 minutes while feedings. Also having her upright for 30 minutes after feedings helps as well. Honestly I am really bad at doing this at night cause I am just so tired, but it really does seem to help. Also, burping over you shoulder seems to help, and when having her upright I spend about half the time with myhands under her armpits to help elongate her stomach.

Hope this helps! Also, if you do end up going on medication I would expect to see her pain improve, but still have some spit up.
