Babies: 0 - 3 Months

help! poop change!

My baby is fed both formula and breast milk from bottles, with an occasional nursing session. Weve had this routine for 2 and a half weeks now. last night her poop had a little bit of a different consistency mixed in with her normal yellow seedy poop. We just woke up to a diaper full of the different poop. It's still yellowish, but was mucusy or stringy, looked like ricotta cheese and has a super strong odor. Additionally she hasn't taken very much formula at her last couple of feedings. She normally has 3 or 4oz every 3 hours and she's only taken 1 or 2oz the last 2 or 3 feedings.

These are the things that were different yesterday...
1. She had 2 breast milk bottles in a row. Typically she has one in the morning and one in the evening. That's all I can produce.
2. I upped my fenugreek dose from 1220mg to 3660mg.

Any ideas? Not sure if I should leave a message at the doctor's tomorrow...

  • My 6 week old is also getting both formula and breastmilk. He's been on formula too now, for about a week or so. Before the formula it was runny, and seedy. And when i couldn't pump for a few days his poop was no longer runny. Now his diaper gets full about once or twice a day. It actually smells now. And is both runny ish, but not as runny as when he was just breastfed. If your daughters not eating very much i would leave the doc a message. Everything sounds normal to me, besides the not eating very much part.

  • And i just saw that your LO is 3 weeks, my son was eating only about 2 ounces every 3 hours at 3 weeks, he's up to 6 ounces now ever 4 or 5 hours. So it actually does sound pretty normal.
  • If it's mucousy, call the doc. And be prepared to describe it, and if possible, save one of the diapers, especially if it continues. My son had mucousy poop at 4 days old, turned out he had a milk protien allergy. It could be a food allergy, something you ate maybe since he had more breastmilk closer together.

  • As long as she's having ENOUGH diapers, then I wouldn't worry.  I was told by our pedi that poop can change color and consistency without a need to worry.  Only worry if it's white, black, or red.
