Breastfeeding

growth spurt?

Is it possible for LO to have a growth spurt every other week? We just got done with one right before 4weeks and now she is 5 weeks 2 days and i think she is having another one (constantly wanting eat, fussy, etc.)  Is this normal? Should I supplement with BM from a bottle to hold her better?

Re: growth spurt?

  • I think it is normal. DS had one at 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 9 weeks, and has them about every three weeks. He started off at 6lbs 14 oz and now weighs around 18lbs. Some babies just grow fast and early. I would keep feeding on demand and see what happens in a few days. If you are concerned about weight gain I would see your pedi just to check.

During growth spurts, DS would eat every 1-2 hours.

  • I thought of a few more things- if your LO is having enough wet diapers then I would not be too concerned. SInce breastfeeding is a supply/demand relationship, you want to keep the baby at the breast as much as possible so your body knows how much to make.

  • I'm definitely not concerned about weight gain. Since her 2week appt she has been gaining about 1lb per week!

That is good! I wouldn't worry too much about it then. The eating schedule will probably adjust in a little while. Sometimes you just have a little one who LOVES eating. Mine is one of those, haha. Luckily, I really enjoy breastfeeding and it relaxing to me so that helps a lot.
