Co-sleeping Toddler with Twins on the way

Hi!  This is my first time posting here.  I have a daughter, almost 22 months old and expecting twin boys in the spring.  EDD 7/20.

My daughter was never into co-sleeping even at my best attempts (wanted those cuddles).  We moved at the end of the year and DD also transitioned from her beloved nanny to a daycare.  During those major life changes she was also sick with a cold and cut several teeth.

My decent sleeper started waking at night.  She naps and goes to bed at night on her own in her crib.  She even asks for her crib when she's tired.  In the middle of the night she sometimes puts herself back to sleep but most often lately she cries until I bring her in my bed.  Once in my bed she usually sleeps soundly execpt for the random nights she squirms.  I love the snuggles and co-sleeping but with twins on the way not sure how this will all play out once they are born.  Do any of you co-sleep with a toddler and/or twins?  Curious how it works or if you had success transitioning toddler into their own crib/bed.

Re: Co-sleeping Toddler with Twins on the way

  • Our boys are almost 11w and we mostly cosleep with them. Generally DH and one baby sleep in one bed and I sleep in the other bed with the other baby. Lately I've been handling the twins in one room and he sleeps alone or takes any of the girls who wake up. We have kids all over the place at night!

I would be worried about your DD sleeping with you when the babies are tiny. What we did was keep any girl that was sleeping with us on the other side of DH or at the foot of the bed if they insisted they sleep with us. When my DD2 was born, we made a little bed for her in our room on the floor with her crib mattress. That worked out really well. Now that the babies are getting bigger, I don't worry so much about having them all in one bed at the same time, but I try to discourage it just because I need some sleep! The twins don't sleep well together unless they're swaddled, and I think as of last night we're no longer swaddling, so I think they'll be in separate cribs. They mostly do their RNPs when they're not sleeping with me, just for easy access! Right now I go to sleep with DH and then move into the daybed in the nursery when the first one wakes up, and I finish the night there. Every night is a matter of survival - do whatever it takes!

  • When I was pregnant with DS # 2 our first was still co-sleeping with us.  We transitioned him to a bed when he was 17 months old because DS #2 was coming in 3 months and we needed the crib.  He loved his big boy bed but still needed someone to lay with him.  It was sad but very needed to have him out of our bed because #2 was going to be in our room in a bassinett.  Can you try a bed and see how it goes.  One of you could always sleep in the bed with her at first or she may just transition fine.  GL

  • We were co-sleeping when I got pregnant and knew we needed to get DS1 to his own room before the twins arrived, so they wouldn't disturb his sleep...

We started by setting up his crib in our room, right next to our bed. It's a convertable crib, and we tried doing it as a toddler bed at first, but he refused to stay in it. I would lay down in bed next to the crib and put my hand through the slats to stroke/comfort him or just hold his hand.

Once he got used to sleeping in his crib we moved it back to his room. There were plenty of nights that DH or I had to go to his room, sit down next to his crib and hold his hand, and many nights that we slept on the floor in his room. But he slowly adjusted....

The slow and steady approach worked well for us.... so my advice is to start working on the change now, while you still have plenty of time left in your pregnancy.

    Good luck and congratulations!!!
