DD is always constipated... what to do?

My DD is seemingly always constipated... he gets lots of fiber in her diet and it doesn't seem to help.  She strains to poop and it is always little balls.  I forgot to ask her pedi dr at the 2 year check up about this since I have a newborn and just forgot when we were dealing with his issues.  Is there anything to give her to help with this problem... over the counter or food.  I thought about trying prunes after I saw a lady stocking up on the prune pouches the other day at Target.

Definitely try the fruits like prunes or pears or grapes. Ds1 had a little constipation when we first started solids but he loooooves his fruit so much that he now tends to be a bit mushier. Tmi? Probably, sorry. Also lots of fluids water or watered down juice will help too.
If you are finding that adding in more fruits isn't helping then I would bring it up with the pedi.

I would def try prunes. If DD likes yogurt or oatmeal you can get the baby food pure and mix it on that. DS always hated straight prunes.

Along with what PP said, make sure you reduce things like bananas, applesauce, and cheese from her diet...those tend to bind you up.  If the foods don't work, then your pedi might recommend miraLAX, this can be pretty pricey but works.  I'm trying to avoid it myself but we use it on occasion.

We are on a daily regimen of miralax.  We only give a teaspoon a day though, and that keeps him pretty soft.  Otherwise, he pretty much never had a comfortable poop unless he was sick.  It was terrible...we would have to help the poop come out, and it would herniate his anus every time and he would scream and cry for about an hour after that.  This was EVERY TIME he pooped. We were at our wits end because he was actually afraid of pooping.

I only say this because I dont know if your situation is as bad as ours...if it is, things like fruit or fiber probably won't help.I think I want to take him to a GI specialist to see if something like a probiotic regimen will help instead, but right now the miralax is working so well.

Also, I was reading up on some theories that say that fiber is actually a bad idea for constipated kids. That if we look at animal poop of animals that eat high fiber diets (cows or deer, for example) they are hard pellets. I don't know how true the theory is, but it definitely made me question the ridiculous amount of benefiber I was trying to give him to make his going comfortable.

I think different bodies respond to different things differently (LOL that sounds funny). But honestly, when it comes to pooping it seems everyone is different. For DS, it's pear juice, lentils, or raisins that help him go easier. For DD, it's chocolate and blueberries (not together).

I'd keep track of what she's eating for a bit and make note of meals that come before an easier BM to see if there's a pattern.

Besides straining does she show any signs that she's trying to hold in her poop? It could be that she's impacted or has associated pooping with something negative and therefore needs a laxative or stool softener to teach her that pooping is OK.

DS was on Miralax for a while but I didn't like the idea of us using a laxative with him. At 2 years we got the go-ahead to use fiber supplements. We use the clear Target brand stuff (which is supposed to be the equivalent of Benefiber). We add 2tsp to his juice daily. Works like a charm!

We are also on the daily miralax. She also has no cheese, bananas, or apple sauce. I do not love the idea of miralax daily but it is working right now. We have tried every other day and that did not work. We have discussed this all though with our dr. She also has a certain amount of juice a day. We do not love the juice, but it is better than the screaming that comes when she can not poop.

This sounds just like DS1... I've kept him on miralax until now. Had a long discussion with the pedi at his 4yr check. She suggested cutting his milk intake to less than 16oz/day. (He drinks a TON)! Adding benefiber and probiotics, one glass of juice a day. Doing that for 2mo, THEN cutting the miralax. I also agree with cutting out bananas & applesauce. However my kids LOVE both! Good luck!

We give Ava probiotics each day (mix a little scoop into her milk once a day) and it keeps her digestive system pretty much on track. Sorry you're dealing with these issues!
