Teething?

My LO has a diaper rash and funnier than normal poop EBF is fussy and not his usual self, wines in his sleep and wakes up crying and is chewing on his hands, teethers, my fingers etc. He's 15 weeks which I thought was early for teething. We have a doctors appointment coming up and I'll ask her opinion for sure but is this teething? How do you know for sure and that he's not in pain from something else? I feel so helpless when he cries himself awake from a nap. I've tried camilia drops and they seem to help for a short period of time. I resorted to tylenol tonight because he was bawling for ten minutes straight and this is a baby who rarely cries and usually uses his cooing or yelling to get his point across. Any ideas?

Re: Teething?

  • I'm not sure, but this describes my daughter to a t today. She never fusses and fussed off and on for most of the day today. She even whines every 45 minutes in her sleep. I'm thinking that she's either teething, gassy or going through a growth spurt. I don't know, but she has an appointment this week so I'll talk to her doctor then.

  • Update us with what the doctor says!! I'll do the same.
  • I had the same question about DD. She has been extra fussy lately and putting her hands in her mouth all of the time. I was told that excess drool is another sign. Keep us updated!

  • Your doctor will tell you best of course, but it could be teething but I read waking up crying could also be an ear infection (not to scare you, promise). But I think there could be other signs if it was ear infection. I don't remember the full article but it was on whattoexpect.com. I hope your baby feels better fast!!!!
  • Sounds like teething to me. It may or may not be (I'm certainly no expert) At LO 4 mos. appt. pedi told me LO was NOT teeting and it wouldn't happen until 7-9 months. Oops, he cut a tooth last week Surprise!  He began at about 3.5 mos. with excess drooling, gnawing (more than just chewing and exploring with his mouth), little diarreha here and there, general fussiness and a dry cough last few weeks.  It would be bad for a couple days to a week and then get better.  It took quite awhile for that tooth to pop through.  Try giving your LO teething toys.  If especially fussy I've had good luck with teething tablets, they work fairly quickly (I actually rub them on his gums, one on bottom and one on top) but the relief doesn't last very long.  I would ask pedi before trying Tylenol. HTH...

  • So the pedi told me the same as PP, that it's early for teething. I had her check his ears and all is well there. She checked him out pretty good and said he sounds pretty healthy so I'm thinking teething is the only real explanation. I guess time will tell! I'll keep up with the teething drops and she gave me a cream for his diaper rash. Hope you ladies going through the same thing also get answers soon.
  • My DS started teething at about 2 months old. It must have been teething because he was gnawing on everything like he was putting pressure on a specific area of his gums. He hasn't cut any teeth yet though. I'm thinking the next time he teethes we'll start to see some though.

The only thing that works for us when he's in a teething phase is Tylenol.

ETA: Don't use Orajel! It can numb baby's throat and gag reflexes which is not a good thing (obviously).

Also, I would listen to your gut; obviously, as pps have proven, pediatricians don't actually know everything about babies.

  • we might have a lo that is teething two tho nothing has shown up yet.  she just turn 4 months on sunday but she was also three weeks early.  last month she wouldn't stop putting her hands in her mouth or act like she was chewing on her gums.  other than that nothing else seemed to upset her.  Not really sure tho since this is our first.
