Babies: 6 - 9 Months

yogurt/dairy allergy?

DS is 6.5 mo and is EBF. We did start purees at 5.5 mo and he has tolerated all food so far.  Today I gave him 1/2 container of baby yogurt (banana flavored but he has had banana already). As soon as we finished I noticed a red and hivey rash all over his mouth. I wiped his face down and the rash went away within 15 min or so. So far he has not had any other symptoms, thankfully. Does this mean he has a dairy allergy? I will not give him yogurt anymore but should I also avoid ALL dairy now? (I am starting BLW..) I contacted the pediatrician but have not heard back from them yet. Thank you and I am so nervous/sad that this may be a dairy allergy.

Re: yogurt/dairy allergy?

  • He could have a slight milk intolerance. I breast fed my LO till 6 months.  Hes now 8.5 months.  He had a slight milk intolerance but his started when he started formula and it came in the form of eczema.  If you dont get a straight up answer from the ped Id take him to an allergist.  This way youre not always guessing.  Best of luck!! :)

  • I trieded yougurt with DD at 6.5months and it didn't go very well. She was crabby for two days, but I didn't put two and two together as a potential milk intolerance/allergy until she had exczema patches on her chest and back on the 3rd or 4th day.

I fgured it was just too early for milk products so I stopped. I didn't think an allergy since I have been eating dairy since she was born and she has never had a problem with my breastmilk. Just last week when she turned 9 months I tried dairy again. This time a little cheese, and cottage cheese. So far she is handling it much better. This morning I once again tried a small amount of plain greek yougurt. We will see how that goes the rest of the week.

If he broke out in hives, but doesn't have a problem with milk based formula, or breastmilk(and you eat dairy) then I would bet he might be allergic to something else in the yougurt you gave him. check the ingredient list. There may be more in it then just cultured milk and real bananas.
