This is my second pregnancy and I have been having horrible issues with acid reflux. Around week 23, I began throwing up in my mouth in my sleep. I always eat small meals 3-6 hours before going to sleep but it still happens. Tums have had no effect. Pepcid only works if I take the maximum dosage before I go to bed, but even then it only works a percentage of the time. Prilosec didn't help. Propping myself up in bed doesn't help. Eliminating dairy and greasy foods hasn't helped either. The only thing that assures that I don't throw up in my mouth while sleeping is sending myself to bed hungry. I've also had two episodes where I've woken up unable to breathe after it happens.
I had this problem during my first pregnancy and the doctors told me that it was normal and to deal with it. So, naturally I got a different doctor for this pregnancy and they're sending me to a GI specialist.
Has anyone ever had this problem, and if so how have you dealt with it? We're using essential oils and it has lessened the problem, plus cinnamon and honey. I would like to make the next week and a half bearable before I see the specialist.
Re: Severe acid reflux...
Great to know I am completely stupid...I have had HORRIBLE heartburn/acid reflux. I haven't been able to eat dinner most nights either because the pain is just too horrible. So when I woke up this morning nauseous and starving, I grabbed some cereal. The milk has killed the pain, but I had no clue it was bad for it! I truly amaze myself.
What are some good over the counter brands to help?!
I never cared for chocolate and ever since high school I avoid soda like the plague. I eat cereal in the morning with almond milk and a fresh fruit like blueberries or bananas. I snack in the afternoons with a light sandwich, no cheese, and fruit. I only drink water or almond milk and even those will give me reflux. For dinner it's a light pasta, rice, or baked chicken.
I can't drink water at night because it just sits there and comes up, no matter how little I drink. I also can't sleep sitting up because I have a pinched nerve in my back and I have a one year old to entertain all day. Sitting forward or even in a correct posture makes me sore in my C-Section spots.
Terrible horrible no good very bad thing
There's a post a little ways down about heartburn and indigestion. I posted some diet tips there that might be helpful for you, though it sounds like you've already heard most of them from your doctor. Did you prop up the head of your bed with wooden blocks, or are you just sleeping with more pillows? It sounds like you may be one of the unlucky ones who may need a PPI to help control your issue. I know you said you already tried Prilosec, but there are several other PPIs you could try such as Aciphex, Nexium, and Protonix. While they are all PPIs, they all work slightly differently and you may need to try a few before you find one that works for you. It's like trying to find the right key for a lock. I'm not sure about Aciphex and Nexium during pregnancies, but I know Protonix is safe as I have several friends who used it all 9 months.
Also check your wardrobe. Something as simple as a bra strap that's too tight, or a empire elastic waist dress, or wearing a sports bra while exercising could exacerbate your condition.
Good luck. I hope you find some relief soon. It sounds like you are on the right path by consulting a GI. They know a lot more about acid reflux than an OB would. Hope you feel better soon!
GERD is no joke. I have had it since 19 and it worsens during pregnancy. The symptoms you describe sound like what happens to me as well. I have an overproduction of acid in my stomach.
Prevacid works very well for me. Talk to your GI and they will set you up with something to control your symptoms. I cannot believe that your previous doctors told you to just deal with it. The ramifications of uncontrolled acid reflux are very serious. I have a hernia on my esophagus to prove it!
Good luck to you mama!!
Have you tried papaya?

Hello,
You poor thing, my sister and I both had this very issue in our last pregnancies...our doctor called it GERD. For me, I basically lived on Tums daily because nothing else really seemed to work. On top of the throwing up while I was sleeping and I would get a burring sensation all the way to my ears...It was AWFUL! They only helpful thing, besides Tums were using some receipes online for GERD. It didn't go away completely but relieved some discomfort...Hope this helps!
