Peanut Butter is the Devil :(

So my first day back to work after vacation and i get excruciating abdominal pains , vomiting , cant hold anything down. Its to the point where im scrunched up in a ball in my classroom and finally decide to call my doctor. I was sent for the first time ever to labor and delivery. Long story short , after many tests and extensive monitoring ; Baby is fine , active , strong heart beat! As for me , blood pressure fine , blood sugar fine , and have a Bacterial virus caused by PEANUT BUTTER! I was so relieved the baby was okay, mommies can fight off anything for their babies! Becareful ladies! I ate Jiffy Extra Crunchy religiously, i dont know what happend.

  • Wow - that's crazy!  How do they know it is from the Peanut Butter?  I have been secretly resenting my DD for her peanut allergy that keeps us from having PB in the house - maybe I should be thanking her!

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • Oh my! Sorry to hear you weren't well but at least baby is fine!

What kind of bacterial infection can you get from peanut butter and how did they know it was that?

Just ate some peanut butter for lunch....but it was skippy reduced fat creamy.

  • Peanut butter was the main ingredient I consumed within the past 24hrs. I have GD so i eat alot of peanut butter for protein when i cant stand looking at chicken or eggs anymore. THey did so much blood work and tests and a bacterial infection was what they ruled. I was nervous that it was ECOLI or Salmonella. They said it could have been a viral strand , nothing to harmful, maybe the peanut butter was going bad or was contaminated and due to all the recalls on peanut butter lately they suggested I steer clear from it from now on.

This. How did they know it was the peanut butter and not regular food poisoning? I am irrationally attached to my JIF and would be very sad to know that there was some horrible peanut butter bateria.

I am very happy that you and baby are ok. Feel better!

ETA: you answered my question. BOO peanut butter.

If you arent feeing any immediate reaction then you should be fine. Mine started literally a half hour after consuming , it was horrible!

  • make sure you report this to the manufacturer so they can issue a recall if necessary (if they have gotten enough calls)

glad you and baby are okay!

  • Yuck! That's no fun.

If you have to avoid PB and are craving it on a daily basis like I am, maybe try Sunbutter (made from sunflower seeds, tastes pretty similar). My DD is in a nut-free school so I use it a lot to pack her sandwiches for lunch. Trader Joe sells it, or any "healthy" grocery store like Whole Foods or Sprouts.

  • Wow, sorry to hear but glad you and baby are doing better.  I haven't bought any PB in a while as I now buy only almond butter.

  • Sorry you had to endure such misery. It's been 20+ years since I took Consumer Economics, but as I recall, chocolate and peanut butter have the most relaxed regulations when it comes to the legal limits of filth.
  • That is crazy! I am glad everything turned out ok. Although it stinks about the pb. I have been obsessed with it!

  • First, I am sorry you are so sick...that sounds awful, and I hope you feel better soon!

But I am still confused as to how the know it was the PB? I am also confused as to how, after tests determined you had a bacterial infection, they said it could be a "viral strand." My understanding was that bacterial infections like salmonella, etc. were totally different than viruses. (And that "bacterial viruses" were viruses only bacteria could get, in essence making them a sort of anti-bacterial agent.)

The time frame of onset of food-borne illness can be 30 minutes up to days or more  later. Did you eat out recently? It is norovirus season, after all, which generally takes a day or so to show up. And peanut butter doesn't really "go bad." Eventually it will turn rancid after many months of being open, but if you've been eating that much of it, I can't imagine you've had the same jar for 9 months.

Contamination is possible..peanut butter has been associated with a lot of salmonella over recent years, but you seemed to indicate they told you it wasn't salmonella? Did they tell you what bacteria it was?

I know I am being argumentative here, but I really don't understand how they know it is the PB. I eat a lot of PB, being a vegetarian. A LOT of PB. The recalls have freaked me out a bit over the years, and I now buy my PB five or six code/date matched jars at a time. I am hoping it cuts down my risk for future recalls. Basically, I think there are so many things freaking me out about everything, and I really want not to be extra freaked out by my great love of PB. I need PB! So I claim Unfair Peanut Butter Profiling, dammit!

Now that I am done with that, I really hope you feel better soon. Many of the bacterial food poisonings, as well as noroviruses, suck monkey balls but tend to be short-lived. Hopefully that will be your experience!

  • I LOVE my peanut butter - I had a PB sandwich today in fact. I don't plan to stop eating it, all foods carry some risk of contamination...you can also contaminate your sandwich by making it on a dirty kitchen counter or eating it with dirty, germy hands.

Hope you feel better soon though!
