Babies: 6 - 9 Months

BF and Sleeping

I am at a loss as to what is going on with my LO (now 6.5 months).  For months, she would go to bed at 7:30 and sleep to 12.  Sometimes at 12 she would want to eat, but usually she just needed a little soothing.  Then she'd be back up at 4 to eat.  This was great!   Starting around 5.5 months all bets were off.  She's up at least 6-7 times a night and is wanting to eat at least 4 of those times.  It seems like this is too much food (although some of the time she's just having a partial feeding).  She nurses at 7 am, has 3 four ounce bottles while I am at work, and then nurses at 5 pm and again before bed.  We just started solids last week (no decrease in milk).   I was thinking it was a growth spurt, but it has been going on for a little over 2 weeks.  Any ideas?  Anything I should be doing?

Re: BF and Sleeping

  • DS is FF but seems hungrier more often now that I've started solids. I don't get it, either. I'm trying to get him on a schedule of alternating between bottles & solids to hopefully keep him satisfied all day.

  • Our LO's are about the same age and I have noticed an increase in his nursing during the day.  I really think it is all the activity he does now, the little guy is just burning through more calories.

  • here is a suggestion.  supplement with a couple of ounces after her last feeding, see if she'll drink it.

What temperature are you keeping her room at night?  I found that anytime it is a little chillier in his room, my son wakes up more.  I keep his room at 72 and he sleeps from 7:30 till 4 to eat and then back to bed for another 3 hours.

At this age she should be able to go 8 hrs without a feeding.  If it is a growth spurt, she should be over it by now.

    Good luck.

  • Your LO might just be getting in the habit of waking up to be comforted. I know when my DD turned 5 months she stopped taking a paci but would nurse and use me as a paci even of she had eaten. She wanted t be comforted. If its a growth spurt and your LO is drinking then keep feeding but if its just for comfort I would try and break the habit.

  • I had the same experience and thought it was a growth spurt too. At 5.5 months exactly (when we started solids) he stopped sleeping through the night and would wake up once. Soon it became twice then we were up to 4 (sometimes more). I think he made it a habit and nursed less during the day and more at night. At 9 months I lost my mind and tried sleep training, and started off by cutting night feedings and topped off our 8pm feeding with a bottle. It worked well but I cut out too many feedings too quickly, and i'm currently pumping around the clock to get my supply back up...

After a couple of nights I guess he adjusted  and got a better feeding during the day because he was very content just being held. So I started my sleep training from there.

Does she finish her bottles during the day?
