I can't tell if my kid can talk or not. I only recognize a couple words, but daycare provider tells me about all the things she says . All I get is happy, sad, or angry babble.
He only says dada with purpose. Other than that, all babbles. Of course, some people claim they have heard him say up to ten words. Maybe I just don't understand him.
My daughter is one of the oldest ones here and she just (like in the last 2 weeks) started saying a few words. She is still behind where she should be but I'm trying not to worry.
DD says a few things consistently but they are damn near unrecognizable as words. She says "bah" for bye and "ot" for hot and "mo" for more along with mama & dada. All these have just been in the last week or so (aside from mama & dada). There are a few other things she says on a regular basis but I'll be damned if I know what they are.
We only have a handful of words. Most everything is dada. I think yesterday she might have said mama.. She understands everything I say in English and Korean but refuses to speak in either language.
Crystal, I love you!
Nontalker in the house right here! Zero recognizable words, but a lot of babbling nonsense.
This. Zero. I try not to worry, but it gets hard sometimes (like today when we were hanging out with her 15 month old boyfriend, who is basically a friggin' verbal prodigy).
My daughter is grumpy and taciturn, so it's a good thing she's gorgeous.
Gotta say, I am relieved by the non talkers. Seems like us non talkers need to post more about it. I always just read about all those kids who are currently writing their second book.
Thank you ALL so much! I was really starting to think there was something really wrong. She does squeak, point and babble up a storm but nothing that sound like a legit word.
Mine has said maybe 4 words a few times each. It's really random though, and I wonder if he's really saying words or I'm trying too hard to hear them. The only thing he says often and with purpose is dada and mama. Mostly dada though. He pretty much communicates by pointing and grunting. I keep waiting for this word explosion everyone seems to talk about, but so far we're not even close.
I also feel like that sometimes . Maybe in my mind I am looking for words to be pronounced like an adult would.
I definitely think this can be an issue. We've noticed that Lily will be saying a "word" for a while before we actually realize she's saying it. Didn't someone post a link to a list of sounds and when they develop? It's helpful to realize that there are sounds that they just aren't going to make for a while still and to try to figure out their words without those sounds.
Layla consistently says Daddy/doggy, they sound exactly alike, but she correctly calls this to both her dad, and the dogs... however she also calls any male figure she sees daddy, or any man in a picture.... Other than that there's tons of babbles and "eh'eh'eh'eh'eh's" for whatever she wants, which drives me batshit crazy sometimes.
Even more than this though I'll think she's learned a new word, she'll say it 2 or 3 times and then we never hear it again. She clearly said "baby" for about 3 days, and pointed out babies in pictures and the mirror, but we haven't heard it again for nearly a month. Same with Kitty. I think she's just stubborn. I try not to worry about it too much, she is able to communicate by pointing, and is able to follow directions. We try to name things as much as possible, and get her to repeat us, but she wants nothing to do with that. Oh well. She'll come around eventually.
Wes has a few words. Nana for banana and my mom, nana, buh for blueberry, he says mama and dada, maybe a few other words. He babbles constantly and is the best jibberish talker you'll ever meet.
I'm with Nita... I think maybe I don't understand him. My mom swore the week she was here that he was saying this and that word, and I never heard it. She's not an overly moon eyed crazy grandma, either.
July 20th, 2012: Never forget the day the fb douchebags tried so hard, but ultimately failed. Viva la October 2011! Yeah, I called you douchebags.

Other people swear they hear him say words, but I don't hear it. My DH says I'm expecting too much annunciation.
Often when I do hear him say a word that I'm pretty d*mn sure is a word, I won't hear it again for a loong time. For a while he was saying "E-mo" for Elmo, "Nana" for Nana, pointing at my nose and saying "No" and pointing at me and saying "Mama", and "Buba" for bubbles. This weekend I don't think he said a single word though (except "Uh oh", his favorite).
He "talks" to us all the time...just not in our language.

My DD talks all the time...in chinese! I have heard her say "mama" (although this is usually in her WHINING voice)...."dada", "bye bye" "uh-oh" "yummy" , "elmo" and a few other things. I think she can also say "i did it." but it comes out in the middle of babble and I am never sure if she is really saying it or if I am just trying to make her babble into something.
After 2 years of TTC, our daughter was born on Oct 31, 2011! 7lbs 13oz 20 inches long ">
Re: Any other non-talkers?
My niece is 5 months older and literally did not talk at all. Now within the past month, she has gone crazy talking.. And she's really good at it!
He follows commands and identifies people and things so I figure the words will come when they do.
DD says maybe 2 things and goes days without saying any real words. Just babbles. She does point and follow instructions.
I also feel like that sometimes . Maybe in my mind I am looking for words to be pronounced like an adult would.
