Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Daycare: Sleeping in swing/face covered??

Ok ladies - I need some help on some resources. I was in my child's daycare the other day and two of the babies were in the swings, sleeping soundly...not a problem EXCEPT their faces were fairly covered up by light blankets. I do not think this is safe and do not want any children to get hurt or the daycare to end up closed because the director thinks that this is an OK practice. However, she can be quite defensive because "She has had lots of training in this area". I would look into another daycare but there are none available, this is the only daycare in town (crazy i know). So does anyone know of or have any reputable sources of this type of information that I can take into the daycare to back up this being a problem!

Re: Daycare: Sleeping in swing/face covered??

  • All the research I've done on SIDs points to Carbon Dioxide being the cause.  I.E. stomach sleeping leading to a pocket building up in front of their nose, secondhand smoke taking oxygen out of the air.  Show her this https://www.sidsprevention.com/co2andsids.html

  • What is "fairly" covered up?  Were their noses out?  I have found that DS likes his face buried into me or a blanket when he is sleeping. He's weird like that. At naptime I will pull a blanket way up around his neck and on his mouth, with his nose hanging out.  I keeping an eye on him, so I am not worried.

  • My suggestion would be to check your state law book. In Wisconsin all infants need to sleep on their backs in a crib or pack n play. If a parent wants their baby to sleep in a swing or up right position they need a doctors note. As for blankets our day care doesn't even use them. They use sleep sacks. I would look into it and talk to the director.
  • As someone who has worked in daycares for 10 years, I can tell you this is not normal practice and I would find a new daycare. I just worked at a Bright Horizons for the last 5 years and they never even had swings in the infant unit! Anywho, this would not fly in most centers im sure and definetly wouldnt fly with me! I would bring it to the directors attention then look into other centers. Just my opinion.

I think this happening at home is different then it happening at a daycare. like you said, you are keeping an eye on him at all times. And like a PP said, the center I worked at didnt even use blankets, only sleepsacks.

  • Lurker from 3rd tri.... I dont know where you are located, but in texas it is state law that they cannot sleep with blankets. I would have a big issue with this.

I should specify in a daycare setting. It is part of the state regulations for daycares...

Yeah, I was thinking about this.  Its totally different if they have more than one or two to be watching all the time.

  • I think you need to discuss this with the director, course be prepared for her to take offense to it and you may need to take your LO to another provider. But if it were me, I would want to say something rather than not and IF something tragic happens, you could have prevented it.

    Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

  • Thanks ladies - I will bring it up, if anyone has any more information that I could use to support this issue please post it here and I will use it so I have some backing.  I really love the daycare other than just a couple issues that need resolved (this being one of them).  The other thing is, its not like I can pull my kids w/o quitting my job because this is the only daycare within 40 miles.

What state are you in? Your states dept a Family and Protective Services should have minimum standards posted on their website and it should mention there to infant sleeping policies this would trump any policy your daycare has

  • In South Dakota but not finding much out there on the web...grrr...

  • I found out from my SIL that the daycare I just signed up to put mine is was doing this and one of the reasons she pulled her son out. She showed up a little early one day and her son was screaming and took a bottle away from another child. She made him one and he chugged it down so fast, even though they said they fed him on their sheet. I am now super nervous because there are no other daycare's with openings till May which my dd is already on the list for. Our daycare is in IA but we live in SD. Maybe it is just the area lol. Good luck on finding anything.

I just looked on South Dakota's website, and there regulations are VERY brief... Here are a couple things you can use...

this is a handout that is linked from the SD family services page regarding safe sleeping and SIDS

    https://www.healthychildcare.org/PDF/SIDSparentsafesleep.pdf

here is the Texas minimum standards for child care

    https://www.dfps.state.tx.us/documents/Child_Care/Child_Care_Standards_and_Regulations/746_Centers.pdf

Page 91 talks about sleeping without blankets, in a crib, etc...

page 94 talks about how the head cannot be covered at ANY time (in case they try to tell you, that they cant control if the child falls asleep during swing time)

Both of these topics are "High" in the inspection list (meaning in they got inspected and they saw this happening it would be a BIG hit against them and their licensing.

This form has licensing contact information for you area. If the director does not help, i would call the licensing people for you area and see what they say

     https://dss.sd.gov/formspubs/docs/CCS/LicensingBro.pdf

Here is another article from Zero to Three (they are are very well known research group in the child development field)

    https://www.zerotothree.org/child-development/sleep/babies-sleep-safety.html

I hope this helps! - If you need more info please PM and let me know. I have a Master's in child devlopment - and can really get down to the nitty gritty research to give you if you need. But hopefully this will be enough to let her know you know what you are talking about.

  • At DS' daycare the 0-3 month infant room has swings, a lot of them! The babies sleep swaddled with a blanket, but the teachers are always right nearby.

  • I say regardless of what she says, you're paying her, so she does what you say. I'd just tell her - I want my child to sleep in a pack n play with a sleep sack and no blankets. Period. And I'd check to make sure it was being done.
  • My 11wk son pulls a blanket or something over his when he sleeps most of the time. I check to make sure he is still breathing and make a little hole for air circulation. I asked his doc about it and she said some babies do that and as long as there is a little air flow or a way the oxygen can circulate, he will be fine. She also told me to just continue monitoring his breathing if he shifts or moves the hole I created. My Niece is 10 months and she wont sleep without a blanket fully over her head. So I guess every baby is different.
