Please share: Newborn night wakings

Hello 2U2s!
I will be joining you all in about a month, and my husband and I were just discussing night time diapering/newborn night feeds. I thought I would ask you all - how are you handling diaper changes?

We have an 18month old, who will be sharing a room with the newborn after 12 weeks, but in the mean time, baby will sleep in our room. If anyone is in a similar situation - what did you do about evening changing?

We were just thinking: change in room on bed? Move the change table to the bathroom or our room? Change in the bedroom where toddler is sleeping and risk a wake up?

Any advice?

  • DD1 was in the nursery and DD2 in our room for the first 6 months. During that time we kept changing supplies in the living room since that is where I fed her during the night anyway. I just changed her on a blanket on the floor or couch. Once DD1 moved into her big girl room and DD2 moved to the nursery we kept all supplies in their respective rooms.

  • Do you have a dresser in your bedroom that could work as a changing table for the 12 week period?  If it were me, I definitely wouldn't risk going into the room where your DD1 is sleeping and risk waking her up too!

I think we will be doing the LR change table too.  We will have a shared Bedroom also after we move the baby out of our room but We'll need the extra space in the kids room for the crib and 2nd dresser... not a super huge room 9x10.

  • We changed DD2 is the livingroom, where she was also fed. I would not go into an older child's room during the night just for a diaper change. I also wouldn't use a bed. I see so many parents posting that they got pee/poop on their bed in the night during diaper changes - no thanks.

  • I had the pack n play set up in our room with the changing station part. Honestly, I was sleep deprived and lazy and changed her in our bed half the time on a towel. I know I just got really, really lucky that she never had a poop explosion or peed before the new diaper made it on. Maybe just put a changing pad on the floor in whatever room you will be feeding.

This.  We put a changing pad on our dresser.

  • You'd be amazed at how they adapt to sharing a room! Ours are 21 months apart and we had DD move into the bedroom with DS when she was 10 weeks. When she woke at night to nurse, which was usually just once around 5 am at that point, I would quietly get her and bring her to the living room for a quick diaper change. Then I would take her back into the room to nurse in the rocking chair. Or I would bring her to our bed to nurse! They are nearly 3 and 13 months now and they both sleep so well in the same room. We love listening to them chatter to each other before drifting off to sleep each night!

  • My scenario is/was...DS1 sleeps with us, and DS2 sleeps beside us in the cosleeper.. When DS2 was a newborn, I'd take him into his bedroom and change him, feed him, rock him.  After a while when he's sleeping more regularly, I'd only get him out of bed if he had a dirty diaper, if its pee I let it go until morning, and that works well.
