Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Self soothing?

DD is 6 months old. She STTN from 2 months-4months and hasn't since then. I am losing my mind. She goes to bed by 8 and wakes up at 2am BUT the thing is that she isn't really awake. She cries out but has her eyes closed and just wants her pacifier put back in or to be re-swaddled and goes back to sleep. It is strange to me that she wants the pacifier put in because she doesn't fall asleep with it in. Sometimes that keeps her alseep for an hour sometimes 2 hours and sometimes she is up again within 15 minutes just wanting the same comforts. Like I said she doesn't actually open her eyes and truly wake up and she doesn't ever get up to eat either. I need help. DH and I don't know what to do to teach her to self soothe. Any suggestions or recommendations are appreciated. TIA!

Re: Self soothing?

  • How long do you wait before going in to give her the paci and/or re-swaddle? We stopped swaddling and it seemed to help since our DD could use her hands as comfort. If DD wakes in the night, we wait 10 minutes before intervening and she puts herself back to sleep 99% of the time.

  • DD was the same way, but I realized I was going in too quickly to see what she needed. Once I figured out what I was doing wasn't helping she is much better at self soothing, and she uses her hands to help with that. I would try un swaddling her and let her try to use her hands!

  • I guess I really haven't been waiting at all to go in... I just jump up to comfort her because I'm afraid she will REALLY wake up. I will try tonight to wait it out and see how that goes. Thank you both for your replies!

  • This was an interesting read because I am going through the same things with my 4mo old. I think I went in there 3 times last night because he started stirring and, like you, as soon as he starts stirring, I get up...but all three times by the time I got in there, he'd already put himself back to sleep and was sucking on his pointer finger.

Cu has been STTN with one MOTN feeding around 4-5ish for almost two months now, but just this week has started waking up something fierce. He was never swaddled, so that's not it. I've been assuming it was the 4mo wakeful, but with last night's experience, I am also going to try to give him a bit before going in there. I'm also scared that waiting too long may get him to wake up more fully. But I shall have faith.

    I wish you luck tonight!

It's funny that you wrote that since DD is named Faith! And I'm glad I am not the only one going through this! DH and I have just discussed it and are going to let her try to work it out herself tonight. We had actually stopped swaddling her a few weeks ago and it made no difference in the sleeping except she will at times smack herself in the facee so we swaddled her up again to keep her from doing that!

  • I am currently in the same boat as well. They whine, I run in right away, give them a paci and they are right back to sleep. Always happens between 1:30am-3:30am.  Maybe 1-3 times per baby!!!  They go down around 7:30pm and don't feed again till 4:30am. I'm with y'all, I need to give them 10 min and see if they use their fingers to self soothe. They do during the day!!!! This is exhausting. Good Luck!!!

  • My LO is 4 mos. Do you see a pattern? At 4 mos they're hitting all kinds of milestones, physical and cognitive. They practice what they've learned in their sleep. And again at 6 mos and again at a year and again at 18 mos.
