Tell me your success with OT

My son is 21 months and has sensory feeding issues. Can anyone tell me success stories they have had with occupational therapy? How long until you started to see improvement in eating? Was it worth it or would you have done a differen route? Thanks!

Re: Tell me your success with OT

  • We have feeding issues that don't appear to be sensory. No success yet. I wanted to say that we have a speech therapist working with our guy as well as an OT for his feeding issues through early intervention. That might be another resource to explore.

  • Speech deals largely with the swallowing aspect of feeding. OT handles a lot of the sensory aspects of feeding. I was just talking to an OT about this yesterday because there has been some confusion where we work about who does what. She explained it like this: I (OT) get the food to the mouth, we meet somewhere in the mouth, and you (Speech) get it safely to the belly.

To answer the original question, yes. O gets OT in school and since November we have worked with him to go from only eating veggies or fruits pur?ed into applesauce or smoothies to trying tastes of various veggies under certain conditions (which mostly revolve around cheese, haha). He will also independently take strawberries and pears from my plate and lick them, and he asked me for raisins the other day!!! We've been pleased with how much more open to trying different foods he has become.

  • My son has SPD and just "graduated" out of OT after about 10 months.  He had a few issues with feeding, mostly textures.  But this wasn't his major issue.  We have had great success with a sensory diet (doing something sensory every couple of hours).  So much so that now he doesn't even require much of the sensory stuff anymore. A few things that we started with for oral sensory stuff is chewy tubes, you can order online different variations, also we did a vibrating toothbrush or teether.  The TMJ joint has an immense amount of nerves and really benefits from different sensory stimulations.  My speech and OT both had him doing this.  I would recommend that in addition to OT ask for speech as well, someone who is familiar with sensory issues.
  • We have a speech therapist. So right now we are exploring to do the OT option to help with the issue also. It's going to be very hard financially so I just want to make sure people have had great success with it or if they found another direction helped better. Thanks for any help :)
  • Are you going through your state's early intervention program? We pay nothing and they come to our house. I think you pay 3 dollars per session if you make 50k a year. I'm in indiana.

  • It took about two months and it really helped dramatically. I definitely recommend it if your child's food aversions are truly sensory related; if they're not you may not see a difference. GL!
