1st Trimester

untrasound noheartbeat

We found out we were pregnant and at 5weeks 5days the doctor ordered an ultrasound after concerns, I had been spotting for 10days ( no cramping ) and the results came back no heartbeat. I still have no cramping and the spotting has nearly stopped , I go for another HCG test today to see if the levels are dropping. My levels went from 3000 to 5000 within that week of ultrasound. We are confused and concerned.

No, it can. You cant hear it on an ultrasound until 10ish weeks but I saw my twins as well as my other two at 6 weeks.

  • We didn't have our first u/s until after 9 weeks because that is standard for our practice. They only do abdominal u/s unless medically necessary and it can bebe difficult to find a hb much earlier than that. Yes, it's possible, but not a definite. Talk to your doctor, see how they are responding. Sometimes, although it's not easy, we just have to wait. I convinced myself it's training for when the baby comes

That's not true either. Heard my baby's heartbeat loud and clear at my first us at 6w6d. May not always be case but it's possible to hear it before 8 weeks.

Op, not seeing a heartbeat yet is normal. Even a day or two can make a big difference right now. Try not to be too nervous yet but I know it's hard. Good luck!

  • OP, was the u/s an abdominal or transvaginal. It can be very difficult to see anything with an abdominal at such an early date. 5 weeks 5 days can be hit or miss at seeing a heartbeat. I only had an u/s at 6 weeks because of 2 previous losses, otherwise my dr wouldn't want to see me until 8 weeks for that very reason. Try not to worry (I know, that is much easier sain than done).

  • 5w5d is a little early for a heartbeat.  My first u/s with DS was 5w6d and the tech could barely see maybe the flicker of one. Did your doctor make it sound like this was bad because of no hb? If so, I would reconsider doctors.  I would not take this as a 100%

  • I have not yet been booked with a baby doctor just yet, just general practice. So he really isn`t saying that much. Wants to wait and see, and we will get results on HCG tomorrow afternoon. Still no cramping and its 5 days since ultrasound. spotting slightly, nothing major at all.
  • Hope this helps you. I am now 11 weeks and found out at 4 weeks. Did my first US at 5 weeks and 2 days all I had was a told sac. Dr told me to wait and come back in a week to check again. Low and behold I got to see and hear my little beans heartbeat at 6 weeks and 4 days. Hang in there. It will be ok! And I am sending lots and lots of prayers your way
  • Thank you all for your comments, sending love to you all!
  • I had my first ultrasound at what I was told was 6 weeks 1 day with no heartbeat, the tech told me it was way too early.  A week later a different tech said I was just that day 6 weeks with a heartbeat and that the first tech was wrong in her measurements and that you should see a heartbeat at 6 weeks.  Well exactly a week later  when I should have been 7 weeks I was measured at 7 weeks 3 days, and exactly a week after that I was measured at 8 weeks 5 days - so my conclusion is that ultrasounds can be subjective sometimes depending on who is reading it.

From my frantic googling at the time I've read that the heartbeat just starts beating around 6 weeks so you may be too early, or the doctor may have just missed it - a few people told me their doctor had to take a few minutes to really look for it.

Good luck, it is probably just early.

The heartbeat you heard at 6w6d is a simulation made by the ultrasound machine. The heartbeat can't be picked up by a Doppler until later. Most doctors don't even bother turning up the sound because it isn't the actual heartbeat sound

    Luker...had to comment.

Both the handheld Doppler and the ultrasound use Doppler to "hear" the heartbeat.  Neither one is a microphone.  Many docs just visualize the cardiac activity early on becuase of the heat generated when focusing that much energy on a very tiny embryo in theory can be harmful.

So the ultrasound cooks my baby.

In theory yes.  The thermal index should always be displayed on the screen.  Most docs pay no attention to their ultrasound settings, and scarily many dont understand the physics behind them.

  • no need to wait for results on HCG levels, I woke up very early this morning and , without a doubt I am having a miscarriage. My husband & I were very prepared and felt strongly that this was going to happen with the spotting and deep down I did not feel "quite right" through out. I have relief actually, not knowing either way was stressing me out a bit. We will heal from this and perhaps a little one will find their way to me again <3 Thank you all for your support
