We found out we were pregnant and at 5weeks 5days the doctor ordered an ultrasound after concerns, I had been spotting for 10days ( no cramping ) and the results came back no heartbeat. I still have no cramping and the spotting has nearly stopped , I go for another HCG test today to see if the levels are dropping. My levels went from 3000 to 5000 within that week of ultrasound. We are confused and concerned.

No, it can. You cant hear it on an ultrasound until 10ish weeks but I saw my twins as well as my other two at 6 weeks.
Wow, about to have my first scan now. Excited!
That's not true either. Heard my baby's heartbeat loud and clear at my first us at 6w6d. May not always be case but it's possible to hear it before 8 weeks.
Op, not seeing a heartbeat yet is normal. Even a day or two can make a big difference right now. Try not to be too nervous yet but I know it's hard. Good luck!
We're one and done!

I had my first ultrasound at what I was told was 6 weeks 1 day with no heartbeat, the tech told me it was way too early. A week later a different tech said I was just that day 6 weeks with a heartbeat and that the first tech was wrong in her measurements and that you should see a heartbeat at 6 weeks. Well exactly a week later when I should have been 7 weeks I was measured at 7 weeks 3 days, and exactly a week after that I was measured at 8 weeks 5 days - so my conclusion is that ultrasounds can be subjective sometimes depending on who is reading it.
From my frantic googling at the time I've read that the heartbeat just starts beating around 6 weeks so you may be too early, or the doctor may have just missed it - a few people told me their doctor had to take a few minutes to really look for it.
Good luck, it is probably just early.
Luker...had to comment.
Both the handheld Doppler and the ultrasound use Doppler to "hear" the heartbeat. Neither one is a microphone. Many docs just visualize the cardiac activity early on becuase of the heat generated when focusing that much energy on a very tiny embryo in theory can be harmful.

In theory yes. The thermal index should always be displayed on the screen. Most docs pay no attention to their ultrasound settings, and scarily many dont understand the physics behind them.
