I am trying to find information about homebirth midwives' rights in the state of NY, and it looks like my Google bone is broken because I'm not having much luck.
Specifically, I am curious about their ability to administer pit and oxygen, write prescriptions, etc.
Anyone have any ideas or know where I could look to find the information?
Re: Homebirth Laws -State of NY?
I'm planning a home birth in Brooklyn, NY with a Certified Nurse midwife. I'm not sure about prescriptions, but I know she will come with oxygen and pitocin among other things. She's already given me a big birth kit full of all kinds of medical supplies to keep at home until the time comes. The best way to find out all the info on what they can and can't do might be to just reach out to one and ask.
The bolded.
Ah, yes, that would make sense. I guess I should clarify that I'm not actually in NY yet, just looking at the possibility of relocating if DH gets a job there. I don't want to call a random midwife up just to ask; maybe I'll just have to wait until we get out there.
Thanks for the responses!
I'm editing my response because I found the correct info.
So I was wrong ... NY is one of three states that licenses direct entry midwives the same way as those with a nursing degree.
Check out: www.op.nysed.gov/prof/midwife/midwifeqa.htm
It looks like all midwives can order certain tests and get a DEA number to prescribe certain medications. And they can do this without a physician. They can also carry Pitocin.
However, NONE can perform surgery. That's simply false.
Awesome! Thanks for the information.
