Re: learning @ home...

  • Reading, sounding out, talking about them and what things start with what letter.  We've got the foam bath letters, and I've got some alphabet flash cards taped up on the slider door.  TOTALLY informal, though.  I'm thinking about doing a word wall, but not quite sure.  I also dug out some alphabet posters from my teaching stuff and I'm going to put it up in his toy room.

  • We made chocolate chip cookies today and I counted out the chocolate chips.  Well to 20 then we dumped them in.  I think repetition and applying it in everyday scenarios is key.

Good idea!  Also, when we are shopping, I hand him fruit to put in the bag.  We (I) count it as he drops it into the bag

Thanks to Dietbet I have only used two bags.  I'm going to use some more Tuesday to make a flourless torte for a  chocolate buffet party that night.

  • My DS has his older sister who is just 13.5 months older so he learns a lot from her. We sing the ABCs often, my DD counts everything, so I tend to do that with DS too out of habit. He can say "3" when I'm counting but that's it. He sings the tune to the ABCs. It's cute. Colors, I usually just say "do you want the cup that is blue or green?" Then tell him "this is the cup that is blue." Who knows if its working. My 2.5 doesn't even know her colors well.

I agree. Repitition is key. Also Leap Frog's Letter Factory DVD is AMAZING! It taught my DD most of her letters and what sounds they make. DS knows the W says wa wa because of it.
  • Since she's been born I've been talking to her about the colors, shapes and textures of things. Her older brother is learning to read and occasionally brings home school work that is addition and subtraction. She can't count obviously but she has memorized the sequence of 1 through 7 and the alphabet song up to g. She recognizes 2 letters in her name from her brother spelling it out with the fridge magnets while she eats lol. And possibly because 75 of people upon learning her name respond with "L O L A LOOOOOLA".
She's definitely picking this stuff up much faster than her brother did but she's learning it through imitating him and because he works with her a lot. A teacher I was not meant to be.
  • We haven't really started numbers yet...though she should be able to count to two because every time I get her dressed I say "one arm, two arms, one sock, two socks."  She has an alphabet puzzle that she likes and she will hold up the letters have have us tell her what they are.

  • We do a lot of informal stuff. When I am driving her to the sitter's house, I will sing the alphabet and count. We read a lot and I point out different colors and things. I think reading is so important because there are so many ways to learn when you're looking through a book. I feel like a crappy mom because I think I should be doing more. One of my college friends makes lesson plans for her baby. Yeah.

  • MH was just asking me about this the other day since I hope to get to SAH with LO soon. He wants to know what activities I'll do so that he's getting the same education as daycare. Um of course I will do activities with him and teach him things but I do not plan on making lesson plans!

ETA I've heard good things about the Letter Factory dvd. But we're not quite there yet. G is just starting to talk now. But we do informal teaching and reading all the time.

  • I am feeling totally inadequate. We count when we are going up and down stairs and say colors when we are talking about things like socks or shoes, but I don't do any pointed learning with flash cards or anything.

    That's just ridiculous.
