Used CD: icky or practical

I really want to cd or LO. But the starter kits are quite pricey. I can't seem to decide whether I think used CDs are icky or practical. Thoughts?

Re: Used CD: icky or practical

  • As long as they're laundered properly and in good condition, I would use them.

It would gross me out if they were even a little stained, though.

All testing shows both H and I are perfectly normal. Baby Nacho had triploidy.

  • I don't think it's gross. I think it's smart and practical to save a little bit of money on them, especially since wont know if they will work out for you until you try them.

Plus you can buy them at different levels of "usedness". You can buy ones that have been used only a couple of times. If you do get ones with a few stains on them, you can always just sun-bleach them and the stains come right out.

I've been checking out some kids consignment shops hoping to score some used CD's.

  • We got some used ones.  It's not icky, especially since you're going to clean them before use no matter what.  It's very practical, and one of the advantages to CDing is that you can re-sell them when you're done.  I wouldn't get velcro ones, though.  That's what we got and the velcro was already too worn.  Compared with brand new ones of the same type that we got, the used ones always stick to other things in the wash and come undone more easily than the new ones.

  • Thanks for your responses! I've been watching YouTube clips on cd and I'm not sure which ones I will choose. I'm leaning towards the clip not Velcro ones. Probably all in ones or pockets but not sure yet. I've heard that some regions have cd courses so I might look for one in my neck of the woods.
  • I wouldn't buy underwear for myself used....I won't do it for my baby either.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • Most of my stash is used. I just tried to buy from people that I was familiar with through the CD board or make sure they had positive interactions on spots or diaper swappers. I only had one diaper that I felt like was not the stated condition.

Also check out seconds for a good deal. Diapers that have small flaws that don't affect function.

  • I doubt we are CDing this one because of daycare requirements and whatnot, but if I were to CD I would totally look for used diapers first. Definitely practical!

  • You have to wash them either way. As long as they were properly cared for, used are fine.

  • If properly cleaned, not gross. If there were hygiene problems then diaper services would not be in business.

  • Majority of my CDs for DD were used. I prefer to buy used because I don't have to strip them as extensively as I did with my new ones. Plus used is soooooo much cheaper!

Clearly you won't CD your child. One of the draws of CDing is that they have a great resale value. People sell their CD for all sorts of reasons. Just make sure that the snaps/Velcro elastic are in EUC. Also, make sure to strip any used diapers before putting them on your baby.

  • Definitely not! I have a few used CDs and they are great. And I've sold some that we don't use anymore too! Try a site like diaperswappers.com. Wash the CD with your normal load when you get it and if its stained, set the CD in the sun for a few hours. The stain will come out! I wish I would have bought more used CDs to save money.

  • You sterilize them when you get them - so no, it's not gross.  Would you ever buy your child's clothes on consignment?  Not the same thing (clearly) but even then there's a chance, and it's likely, that even clothing has had bodily fluids on them and most people wouldn't think twice about buying those.

I love the swap pages for CDs :)

  • I would say 90% of our CD stash is made up of used or "seconds" diapers. It saves SO much money!

  • Not icky! This is one of the few times I recommend a wash with bleach though, just in case. We usually bought used that were only worn a few times and the fit wasn't good for that particular baby or something.

  • Very practical. Most are in great condition. Like many of the PP's stated you wash and sterilize them anyways. Sunning does get rid of most stains. I love all in ones and pockets. I use sunbaby diapers which are a lot cheaper and they fit my son really well. I also love BumGenius 4.0's and Freetimes.

Eh, not wanting to buy used CDs doesn't necessitate being unwilling to sell them.  Nor is resale a requirement for CDing.
