Cloth diapering twins

I have checked out the CD board, too, but looking for thoughts from other MoMs:

Do you have experience cloth diapering your multiples?  If so...

How often did you do laundry? (Trying to decide if 2 days' worth of twins' diapers will be too many to wash effectively...so maybe we just need to plan on daily)

Which type/brand were you happiest with in your stash?

Re: Cloth diapering twins

  • I use GMD prefolds with Snappis and Thirties Duo wraps (with snaps)... I have 39 newborn and 39 small prefolds, 3 Snappis, and 8 covers.  Using only newborn prefolds I wash every 1.5 to 2 days without an issue and using Charlie's I have had no smell or 'funk' issues so far.

Totally doable... feel free to PM me with questions.

ETA: I have a front loading he washer...

  • I found there were just so many to wash every two days. I can push it to 1.5 days but more than that just seems to be a little long. I would still recommend having two full days worth if you can, as it is sometimes hard to get everything done on a strict schedule!

I ended up using more AIOs for the NB days and have a combo of AIOs and pockets for bigger sizes. My helpers weren't prefold people, and it was just easier to not try to explain over and over again. More upfront cost, but I can resell them at the end and will make up a good chunk of my cost. I only lost about 25 on my NB diapers after I sold them!

  • I CD all 3 of mine till my DS1 is now PT. I wash every other day. Use flip now but used prefolds with thirsty covers to start. Very doable. Love rockin greens new ammonia bouncer to add to wash every now again

  • Totally doable now that my girls are a little bigger.  They were tiny at birth and we struggled with NB diapers fitting.  Now that they're bigger, I prefer one size pocket diapers (they are pretty fail proof-DH and daycare can handle them). I like bumGenius and I also have some lesser known brands that are a fraction of the cost and work just as well. (Check out ecobabybuys.com for good deals). I have enough to last us 3 days so I can wash every 2 days if needed.  We still use disposables at night, though, which is probably why I can get away with every 2 days.  I have a top loading HE washer and I've found adding 2-3 bath towels to the load really helps, as it makes the load heavier, thus adding more water.

  • I do laundry about every 1.5 days now, but when they were newborns it was definitely every day.  I'd recommend having 48 to 56 nb dipes so you have time for them to dry, etc., w/o being pressed for time.

I really liked the GMD workhorses for the nb stage with thirsties duo wraps.  I got the snapped kinds, so it was still easy enough for grandma/daddy, but really economical and frankly worked way better than the aios I had.  Now that their big enough for OS dipes I have mostly aios--elememtals, freetime, and swaddlebees simplex.  Even buying more "high dollar" dipes (though I got everything on sale--ddont buy unless its on sale!) I've spent so much less than I would have on sposies.  It blows my mind...CDing twins is awesome!  Happy shopping! :-)

  • I didn't start CDing until they were about 10 lbs mostly because we were gifted so many NB disposable diapers I never got to use our NB cloth.  I use Alva pockets and right now have 14 diapers which is enough for one day. Currently I throw the diapers in the wash when the girls go to bed and DH throws them in the dryer in the AM before he leaves for work.  I just ordered 28 more diapers from a co-op so I dont have to do diapers every night and so that I have spares to keep in the car/diaper bag/etc.

  • I am pretty proud about my minimal cloth diaper stash. I have only 16 Fuzibunz (that I bought slightly used) and 2 Kiwaii OS pockets. I have also sewn a few diapers and inserts myself. Overall, I've spent under $300. That's diapering 2 babies! I didn't start until they fit in the OS diapers though (around 2 months). I wash every day. Even if I had a big enough stash to go longer, I wouldn't. I just don't like having that many dirty diapers. I also cut up some recieving blankets to make cloth wipes and make my own solution for them.

  • I do laundry every 1-2 days.  I could probably go 2.5-3 days if I used all my prefolds but I only use those as a last resort.  Not because I don't like them but because my kiddos are sensitive to wetness and I need to change them so often when I use them.

I have a NB stash and a OS stash, and I have at least one of almost all the major brands.  Out of my NB stash my favorites are the Fuzzibunz XS and the Thirsties fitteds with a XS Thirsties cover or Blueberry Mini Coveralls.  I also like my mini blueberry pockets, Swaddlebees NB Simplex and Happy Heiny.  I like the BG NB too but I didn't try it until my LOs almost were too big for it (they didn't fit in the first few CD I tried so I used sposies for another week or two before trying again).  The BG and the lil Joeys would have fit from birth and they were 5lb 12oz and 5lb 15oz, dropping to 5lb 4oz and 5lb 5oz.

The only NB diaper I don't like is the Grovia because it always wicked by the legs.

In my OS stash so far I have tried the OS Fuzzibunz, Bumgenius 4.0, and a Thirsties duo in the past couple days.  They have all worked well.  My babies were over 8 lbs at their last appt...I am guessing they are close to 9 now.   They will be 7 weeks on Wednesday.

  • We started using the BumGenius Freetimes when the babies were about 2 months old.  We had so many newborn diapers and they were so tiny at birth that it was just easier.  Plus I didn't want to deal with the extra laundry in the beginning. :)  But since then we use only the BG's and I really like them.  I have had some smell issues, but have it pretty much under control now using Tide F&C powder and bleach.  I also have to put them in the dryer to avoid the musty smell but I'm hoping to hang them outside this summer.  We have 36 which is enough to go 2-3 days for us.  We do disposables at night and when we are going to be out for the whole day (errands and short trips are in cloth).  The cost and environmental saves are astronomical.  We also use the liners so we don't have to do the sprayer thing.  I would highly recommend cloth diapering!

  • Thank you so much for all of the insights!

We CD'd DD1 (who seems to finally be catching on to potty training - hooray!), but while planning for the twins, I feel like I'm new at this all over again.  Like a couple of you said, I'm thinking we'll probably need to wash every night or 1.5 days at first, simply due to the quantity (and I just don't know how many I can get in our front-loading HE machine & still have it clean efficiently).  While I love our BGs, I'm hoping to do a lot of prefolds & covers (Thirsties & Bummis, probably?) as much as possible.  However, with DD, I was always frustrated when daycare & family members didn't get the prefold tucked into the cover properly & then they'd complain about leaks... so I know we need the AIOs/pockets of some kind, too.
