Does c-section=epidural?

I'd like to go without an epi if possible. I am allergic to PPD in hair dye and have heard it is also in epidurals yet every single dr. I have asked, doesn't seem to know for sure...

Do you have to geet an epi to have a c-section? or are there other drugs available?

Re: Does c-section=epidural?

  • General anesthesia is an option, but generally yes, to be awake you'd have an epidural or spinal.

  • If you are having a planned or non emergent section you should be able to get a spinal.

  • I believe the epi for c-section is a dose all at once vs. epi for normal delivery is overtime (if that makes sense). You might have to see what else they can give you. I have heard of people being put under instead of awake during a c-section so that might be an option if they have to use a different drug. I am sure they deal with it
  • Even if you get a spinal, you could still get an epi. My SIL got both, spinal first then the epi so make sure if you and your doctor settle on a spinal, he/she isn't planning on epi too.

The anesthesiologist that talked at our birthing class said they usually do a spinal for a csection so you can be awake. He said they usually would only do general anesthesia in an emergency situation because it kicks in more quickly. No harm in asking the doctor though.
  • Everybody i know has recommended the spinal for a c-sec. My OB also said its what they usually go to but some women prefer the Epi. I too am having a csec and im going with the spinal that way i can get to walking alot sooner and only have to stay in the hops. for 2 days.
