My OB swept my membranes at my 39 weeks appointment during my last pregnancy. I got them swept around 8am that morning, had much stronger, irregular contractions throughout the day, went into labor at midnight and had a baby by lunch! So I would say it worked for me. I was 4cm and 75% effaced when I had it done though so my doctor expected me to go into labor at anytime. I think it did help speed things along. Some women experience a lot of pain from it. It didn't hurt at all for me and I even asked to make sure she had done it!
I was 2cm, 100% effaced with DS1 at a "0" station at 40 weeks & got a sweep. Sweep gave me cramps and spotting for a day. Swept again at 41 weeks (no other progression) and DS1 was born the next morning.
Yes, please tell us more about this procedure! I will be induced in about a week- do some providers offer a sweep as an alternative to medical induction, or at least as a starting point?
My OB won't do membrane sweeps because of the increased risk of infection. That coupled with me hearing I wasn't at all dilated at my 39 week appointment with DS just about had me in tears. I ended up going into labor a few days later on my own, so it all worked out.
I saw a poll once that someone put up on mebranes sweeps and the "did it do anything for you" question. It was around 1/4 or less of those that had it actually had it do anything more than just get them cramping, but I'd probably be begging for that option if I was past my due date.

My sister had it as had the baby 2 days later. She wasn't 40 weeks yet so i dont know if thats what really put her into labor andwhen she had it done, she said it hurt so bad.
I had mine stripped this last Friday and the Friday before. Both brought on a few more intense cramps than I have been experiencing but nothing else. The first time I was dilated to a 3 and this time a 4.

I'm a FTM so this doesn't come from personal experience, but I have numerous mommy friends and none of them suggest the sweep because it just kind of hurt and did not seem to really progress anything..
