XP Anyone LOVE their washer/dryer?

We have an early model (about 8 yrs old now) Whirlpool Duet front loader washer and dryer and we are starting to really dislike them.  Thinking about selling and getting something new.

My only requirement is that it is NOT LG (We had a horrible experience with them in the past). I would consider front load or top load.

Reasons why we don't like ours:

-The mold issue is really getting bad.  I know this is a front loader thing, but we leave the door open all the time when it is not in use and it still grows mold.  I have to run a bleach cycle at least every other week to keep it from being nasty

-We moved and the washbin got off balance.  When we do wash the WHOLE house shakes.  Whirlpool came and looked and them and fixed them the best they could, but they are still bad (yes, they are not on a concrete slab - I am aware that causes more vibration).

-When we were in our townhouse we had a small laundry closet, so we stacked the units.  When the installer brought them, he switched the door around so it made sense stacked.  Now that they are side by side you have to pull stuff around the door.  Small thing, but super annoying.  The person who came to fix the off balance bin didn't know how to switch the door back to the other direction.

Re: XP Anyone LOVE their washer/dryer?

  • We have LG front loaders with vibration pads under them because we live in an upstairs apt with wooden floors.  The LG's we have have a special cycle for cleaning the washers... but yeah they can get a bit musty if the door is shut  or you forget to take washing out ..

I love mine only problem we have had with them is the front panel clips snapped because of the vibration  but that is just cosmetic and the last time the tech came out he brought us a brand new face panel and advised us to hold off installing it as it will happen again because of our flooring.  He said that after the 1st year cosmetic repairs arent covered so told us to keep the new plate till we move to a house..so that is what we did.  the only damage on the existing one is a slight crack where the soap dispenser draw is and when its closed you cant see it.

Other than that it was just the price... holy cow you guys  pay through the  (_*_) for things we consider regular washers and dryers back in the UK lol but I refused to buy top loaders and Home Depot gave us an awesome deal on this set because the ones I was going to buy were not available. I really wanted this red set but had settled for a cheaper white set... and we got these at the same price as the on sale white ones plus an extra discount  for putting it on my home depot card..and no interest period to boot.

  • We have a top loading Whirlpool washer and dryer set that we got at Best Buy two years ago.  I didn't want a front loading washer because of the mold issue.  I'm very happy with our set.  My mom's washer just died last year and she bought the same washer and is also really happy with it.

  • We have Samsung front loaders that we like. We leave the washer door open and havent had any problem with mold. The dryer sensor sometimes leaves things a little damp but now that I use dryer balls that doesn't happen very much.
They were the floor models and we bought them right before new models were coming out so we got a discount from Lowes. And hey that was in the spring, maybe you could find a similar situation. The guys that delivered them managed to hook the up on opposite sides of the hookups so we wouldn't have that door problem you have now.
GL, I hope you get a good deal!

If it's like the LG's the tech told us when installing it to be careful using dryer sheets as the residue coats the sensors... he told us t o make sure we clean the sensor now and then... you might want to check your manual or online to find out where your sensors are... ours are inside the lint trap, when you pull that out the sensors are on the inside of the grill.  It's just a slim strip of metal buried into the grid and easy to miss.

Oh! Thanks for the tip! I will definitely be checking that.
  • I just have an older set of GE ones from someone on Craigslist. They just felt like new front loaders so got rid of their perfectly good, fairly new set for cheap.

I will say, I have been told by the men that worked on my dryer and someone who buying old machines and fixes them to sell that GEs are a huge pain to fix therefore, expensive to fix. I will be going with Whirpool next time.

  • I have had my Bosch front load washer for 7 years now.  Never had to run a bleach cycle for mold. I did have to clean the mold growth in the detergent dispenser but that was my fault, I did not leave it open after the cycle was done.  Can't speak for the dryer because I did not buy it.
