We actually started with naps yesterday because his biggest issue (that led me to want to sleep train) was going down for naps. I'm SAHM and for the past 10days, I could no longer put him down for naps at all. He used to get drowsy with bouncing/rocking/singing, but now he just fights the entire time I'm holding him. The only way he would fall asleep is me holding his arms down (even w/swaddle) and let him suck my pinkie for 20+ minutes. Or let him nurse to sleep and not move him for the entire nap duration. (his naps were 30mins tops)
Yesterday he didn't cry for too long w/naps (I did interval checks on him) but his naps were all 20 minutes. (he took 4 of them)
DH did the bedtime routine last night. M cried for 12 mins tops and was out for 9 hours. I nursed him around 5am and he went back to sleep, but then woke up at 6am, and cried on/off for about 1 hour (DH did interval soothing), and slept from 7a-8a.
The struggle we have right now is still for the naps. It's very difficult to get him to the "drowsy" state during the day even w/rocking and bouncing, and he starts crying as soon as I lay him down in the crib. I'm worried that he's developed a negative association with the crib (at least for naps). Any suggestions?

I'm sorry the naps are still so rough, but sleep training takes time. Hopefully M will pick it up soon. Are you giving him specific cues that it's nap time? Such as a special nap lovey or a specific nap time book? Maybe that will help. I'm no help, I still just nurse to sleep. Don't be like me.

We've had a nap routine for at least 1-2 months & he used to go down for naps w/o a peep and sleep for a couple of hours. Then suddenly he started fighting it and wouldn't nap under any condition. When he finally does, it's a 20-min nap.
But I am going to just do the night sleep training for now until he establishes a good pattern. Naps are too hard to train at this point. I guess I won't get anything done during the day for a while...

One thing that when I read Ferber's book is he says that babies that take mini naps like that(which is what C did) are sometimes getting too much sleep at night. They only need x amount of hours of sleep (say for example 14) in a 24 hour period. If they are sleeping 12 hours at night they might not want to sleep so much during the day. With that in mind we pushed C's bed time back about 30min while sleep training, which helped because he was nice and tired at bed time which equaled less crying, and moved his wake up time up. While it sucks to get up at 7am every morning that is what I do. I wake him up at 7 regardless of what kind of night he has had so that he is on a consistent schedule. That I think helped with lengthening C's naps a little.
I also have noticed that as C is getting older he can go longer between naps. It used to be 1 hour on the dot now he is awake for about 1.5 hours from wakeup till 1st nap and then about 1.5-2 hours of awake time between his other 2 naps. He gets up from his last nap no later than 4:30pm and then we do bedtime at 6:30 and in bed by 7:15-7:30, so about 3 hours of awake time before bed. Could it be that M just doesn't want to go down for a nap early and can handle staying up? I know everyone says to put them down when they start yawning or rubbing their eyes but for C that is to early to put down for a nap. I need to wait until he starts fussing a bit before I know he is ready to sleep. If I put him down before then he cries alot more than if I put him down when he is already starting to fuss.
Sorry I just wrote a novel but I know how hard this is and I know exactly where you are and how it feels. Keep at it as TJ said sleep training takes time. It took a good 5 days for me to see any progress with C while we were sleep training. Hang in there.
