My husband and I started TTC recently. I'm HOPING this is our lucky month! I know they have pregnancy tests out there that can tell you "5 days sooner than your missed period" and I was wondering what kind of experiences any of you had with them. Are they as accurate as they say they are? Any false negatives or false positives? Is there a brand you prefer over another?
Re: Early Result Pregnancy Tests
Yes, please read the 'New to TTGP' link at the top of the page, as well as the blog it links to in the very first lines - there is a ton of very useful info on everything TTC. The following chart showing accuracy levels of testing early is in that newbie link as well, it might help you to decide when it might be best to test:
HPT accuracy DPO
10 dpo : 35%
11 dpo : 51%
12 dpo : 62%
13 dpo : 68%
14 dpo : 74%
15 dpo : 80%
16 dpo : 88%
17 dpo : 92%
18 dpo : 99%

All ALers welcome!
First of all, it's important to remember that those companies base their "5 or 6 days sooner" stuff on a 14 day luteal phase. Very few women consistently have a 14 day LP. What that means is that the test can detect very low levels of HCG, which may appear in your urine as soon as 8dpo. Which is why they say 6 days sooner than your missed period. If your LP is usually 12 days, then you won't get a positive 6 days sooner, because no test can detect HCG at 6dpo.
From my experience (I've probably peed on 500+ tests in my lifetime):
Sucky tests:
Anything with blue dye (Equate and Target brand are the worst blue dye false + offenders),
Digital - you get a more definite answer, but they don't turn positive until 12dpo+ for most women, you can't monitor the line color day to day, and they are expensive
First Response Rapid Result (don't detect HCG until levels are 75-100) - make sure that you don't accidentally buy these instead of the First Response Early Result
Good tests:
First Response Early Result - detect HCG as low as 12.5 (some reports show as low as 6) and it's almost unheard of to get an evap line on a FRER if you read within the time limit
Wondfo's - can be bought VERY cheap on Amazon, and are very sensitive, some say as sensitive as FRER. If you develop a POAS addiction, these are totally the way to go
Answer brand - not quite as sensitive as FRER, but are pink dye and very few evap lines or false +'s; a bit cheaper to buy than FRER
