Babies: 3 - 6 Months

adding rice?

DD has reflux and her pediatrician said that we could mix some rice in with her breast milk, in the bottle, and that might help. but at 3 months i feel like its a little early to start adding in the rice. plus, a couple weeks ago i was told that rice and cerial is associated with children and adults who are overweight. i know i know, i cant beleive what i see on tv. but still, i have to wonder. has anyone else heard of that? i know that when adults eat a lot of carbs (like rice) and lead a sedintary lifestyle (like an infant) they can gain weight. do you think that 3 months is too early to iintroduce rice? has anyone ever used rice to help with reflux? she also told us to feed her every two hours, but ive always been told to feed on demand, not on a schedule.... its also quite difficult to feed every two hours and get anything else done. just wondering how everyone feels about this stuff.

Re: adding rice?

  • A gi told is to add rice and our pedi said its a choking risk. Enfamil ar has rice in it. We had to put lo on meds but we got the same feeding recc...told to undo her on demand. Well we dont. We just burp alot and feed slow with binky breaks. We also keep lo inclined to sleep and feed upright and keep her that way 30 min after eating

  • We've added rice to DD's formula since birth.  It's not a big deal--it only thickens the formula a small amount (it is really not noticeable, although you may need to change nipples), so it's not like she will be eating cereal.  It REALLY does help with the reflux.  Don't worry about her getting overweight--again, it's not like you will be feeding her a bowl of cereal.  And plus isn't it better that she's not puking up everything she eats?

Don't worry about it--just follow your pedi's instructions.

  • The bottom line is your LO needs treatment for her reflux, because otherwise you will both be miserable. I doubt your pedi would advise something that would endanger her health and I'm guessing the immediate benefits outweigh any possible concerns. Childhood weight issues are not directly linked to just one cause (like rice cereal) so teaching your daughter healthy habits when she starts table food is when it really matters. 3 month olds are supposed to be gaining weight and growing pretty quickly so I wouldn't worry about it just yet.

  • Our daughter has severe reflux and was on rice in her bottle at only 3 weeks ( she now 4 1/2 months) as well as zantac. The pediatrician and GI both suggested it and we have had success in keeping her food down since it's thicker. The GI had told us to feed her less amounts  and more often when she was younger because it was easier for her system to digest and keep down. Now that she's older we feed her every 5 hours which is when she demands it. She weighs 16 lbs now -I don't think that's to big. My friends son is 2 days older then her, has only been breastfed and weighs 20lb, so I really don't think you have to worry about your kid being obese from the rice. Plus once they start walking, they will loose those rolls.
  • I would much rather have some rice in my baby's pumped bottle than the alternative to give her weighted formula. I would also be more worried about her not gaining weight from reflux than the small amount of sugar rice is going to give her.

eta Did he offer her meds? Prevacid helped us- the weighted formula helped more though.

  • Those suggestions are very common for reflux babies. I think you'll find success if you do it but if you're uncomfortable with it, maybe ask for other options ?
