MSPI Moms (XP from Breastfeeding)

MSPI moms- I EBF and have been dairy/soy free for a while now. DS has been doing much better (he's almost 4 months). Decided to give him a milk from my freezer stash from when I was eating dairy back in early December. Three hours later he was screaming bloody murder and wouldn't nurse - he was incolsolible. He hasn't been like that in weeks.  I honestly thought he didn't have MSPI and maybe he just "grew up" and was out of the fourth trimester... but the timing was just too coincidental.

So..... How do I know for sure it was the milk protein? How soon would he react to it? I plan on staying dairy/soy free, and maybe test again in a month? Any advice? He never had blood in his stool or a rash, but was really really fussy and gassy (like he used to be until I cut all dairy/soy). Oh, and after he screamed for 30 min he was 100% fine. Actually fell asleep on his own at bedtime!

Thanks ladies!

Re: MSPI Moms (XP from Breastfeeding)

  • It's hard to know if that is the reason but I don't think he has had long enough to "recover" from his intolerance. My son's GI dr. believes that my son's system should not be tested until 11 months, which gives his gut enough time to fully mature.

If I were you I would wait 3 or 4 more months before reintroducing dairy and soy just to be safe.

  • Thank you ladies!  I just wish there was something definitive to tell me yes or no, but I know that he is doing MUCH better when I avoid dairy.  So.... I will continue to do so and wait a bit longer to try it again.

His reaction + the bolded above, would be enough proof for me.

I would definitely still save the milk that is frozen from that time period though, because in a few months you could try it again, and see if his reaction has changed.

This. In my experience, all my son had for symptoms at first was extreme gas and fussiness as well as arching his back during feedings which our pedi assumed was just reflux at first. The mucus/blood in the stool didn't come until later on.
Edit: sorry about formatting, posting from my phone.

DD is MSPI, but EFF because diet change alone didn't resolve her symptoms.

Her allergiest does not want us to reintroduce dairy until one year, and the medical journal articles I've come across say the earliest to challenge is 9 months, or 6 months after all symptoms resolved, whichever comes later.

Can I ask which journal articles you have found?  I'd be very interested in reading them.

Also, I forgot to mention that DS has had reflux from just about birth.  I'm hoping that within the next few months he outgrows the spit-up.  =)
