As for the furniture, we do the same for cleaning but I know at petsmart right in the front they have some type of cleaning machine that you rent for the day. I want to say its 20 for the day? It's supposed to remove all pet odors, hair, anything pet related!

I agree with the anal glands thing, especially if it is a small dog it is really common because their stools aren't solid/large enough to drain them when they do their business. It happens with our small dog if we aren't diligent about draining them. It is actually something you can do at home once your vet shows you how. It is super gross though DH does it.

Anyway if it does happen we use oxi-clean pet carpet/upholstery cleaner it actually has a chemical reaction with bodily fluids (also works if your baby spits up or pees during a diaper change) anyway it lights up the fluid essentially so you can see all the spots and scrub them until they are gone.

    interesting about oxyclean! thanks!

I am not emptying her anal gross, lol I love my dog, but no way could I handle that. I did read that some groomers will do it though

  • Sorry to be gross, but is she having discharge? When we adopted our American bulldog, she had a really awful infection that about knocked you out from the smell. Anal glands will do that too, but they'll usually try to rub their butt on something to express it themselves. Our vet has had to help Ox out a few times, and oh God, the smell! Sprinkle some baking soda on the areas that she's leaving smelly, let it sit a minute, then use some white vinegar and blot it up.

  • I agree with the anal gland. My guinea pigs have to have their's cleaned sometimes, man does it smell!! I do my guinea pigs myself, I would take my dogs to the vet though. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it myself, plus its super gross! Haha

  • This has happened to our dog twice now. Ironically once with each pregnancy, not sure why. We too are too cheap for the vet bill so we just figured it out on our own but our dog licks them til the bleed so we have to keep diapers on her for about a week. Luckily we haven't had issues with the smell so can't help there.

  • I have to take my dog to the vet monthly to have her anal glands expressed.
  • My dog has anal gland problems. Eventually I got tired of going to the vet and learned how how to emply them myself (gross, I know) but she needs it done once a month. She is a Boston Terrier, little dogs are more prone to having issues with that. If that is all it is, it is a easy fix (unless it has become more solid than liquid)

  • I agree with the anal gland thing.  Our dog actually did this the other night for the first time (our one cat always has this problem), so DH had to do a midnight excretion of our dog haha.

If your vet isn't open, a lot of dog groomers can and will do it for you. I would recommend tryijng to take care of it today since otherwise you might have a stinky house by tomorrow:X

  • Bi weekly??!! I dunno what we would do! She's not really a small dog though she's over 60 lbs and is a pittbull

  • Agree on the anal glands. Vets will express them as well as some groomers.

Pet smart has cleaner called natures miracle that we use for everything pet related and it is safe on virtually all surfaces and fabrics.

We have a Pitt and while this doesn't happen often to him, intake him to the vet for it once or twice per year. He will start licking there....a LOT, and if he starts trying to scoot on the floor I know he needs an emptying! Good luck!
  • No advice really, but I want to say good luck and I hope everything works out great with her!

  • I have a 60 pound lab who occasionally expresses her anal glands in the house...it is a truly foul smell! I spoke with my vet about and she said they normally empty when the dog goes number two, but if they don't it can happen in doors. You may want to visit the vet to be sure they aren't infected!

  • Definitely take her in for her anal glands.  My dogs are very small and as they age they need theirs drained more often.  I have found this out only after 2 of them got an abcessed anal gland that had to have a surgical drain put in.  It cost me $600 per dog.  I didn't notice anything was wrong until they burst.  So I definitely take them in every 2-3 months now.
