So this morning at daycare when my husband dropped off something odd occured. One of the teachers in another room pulled my husband aside and said that the other day they asked the kids to tell them the answer to who is the president, they ask them an open ended question each day. My DS is 2. My son said white president. So the teacher asked my husband why he thought my son would say something like that.
So when my husband told me I felt it was very odd that she pulled him aside like that since she is not even his teacher and seemed accursatory that my 2 year old made a racial comment. I was sure that is was just one of those things kids say. This morning for breakfast he said he wanted a big elephant to eat. So I emailed the director and just described what happened to her b/c I found it odd. It was a nice email I just say hey something wierd happened and I think it was an innocent thing but this teacher seems to be making something more out of it. Was I overreacting to have emailed them about it?
My son's teacher called back and she said that she in no way felt it was racist that he is just 2, she is an African American women so I wanted to make sure she did not think we were teaching him bad things. She said that they asked what his favorite color was as well and he said white so he may have just been thinking of that still. I typically am not the type to call the school or anything like that I just felt like the situation was beyond akward and inappropriate.
Re: Daycare Issue
Yea, that is bizarre that they pulled your DH aside to tell him that.
Even weirder that they'd be asking 2 year olds who the president is.

Just for kicks I asked my 3 y/o DS who the president is. His first answer was: "Donald...Donald brings my present.". We read a story book last night where Donald duck delivered a present. So I asked again and clarified not present, president. He then answered "Daddy" LOL.

The teacher sounds like she has her own issues she is dealing with

That teacher must have thought your sons teacher was offended, which obviously seems to not be the case!!
He could also have easily been saying "what president?"
Also - this school does not know what an open-ended question is.
I had to respond because for giggles I asked my son and his answer was "Christmas." Apparently he heard it as "presents" also
But yeah, OP, I think it was weird that she thought anything of it but I'm in the camp of thinking it was a really odd question to begin with.
Ok, I just asked DS....he said Elmo! This seems like a really ridiculous question to ask a 2 year old, and even more ridiculous to expect a meaningful answer and read anything into it. I can't imagine why another teacher would feel the need to approach you about it.
FWIW, after the election DS thought the president was Rocks Obamamamamama.
