Babies: 3 - 6 Months

First Solids: How Much?

LO will be five months tomorrow. We plan on letting her try vegetables for the first time. She's been eating oatmeal cereal twice a day for almost a month now and does well with it. Am I supposed to give her a vegetable instead of the cereal or do I give both? Our pediatrician said only to give her "food" twice a day (mid-morning and early evening), so I'm not looking to add another feeding.

I'm just confused, because of a brochure that Gerber sent me in the mail. According to them, she should be getting food about four to five times a day, plus six small bottles on top of that. I don't think LO is ready for anything close to that yet.

What is everyone else doing about adding in food?

Re: First Solids: How Much?

  • Our LO is about the same age - and our pedi said that he should only get solids once a day and by the time we have our next appointment around 6-7months of age - he should be up to twice a day. So go with your pedi.

I have not started twice a day but we started with cereal for a few weeks and now we are on to fruits and vegs - we feed the same fruit or veg 3 days in a row and then change to a new fruit or veg. Hope that helps!

  • I usually do fruit/ veg instead of cereal or cereal at one feeding and fruit or veg at a second feeding. Cereal has almost no nutritional value, it's just to get LO used to the mechanics of eating. Once they catch on you really dont need cereal anymore. You can also mix fruit or veg with cereal.
