Babies: 3 - 6 Months

tummy time!

My son is almost 5 months old. He hates tummy time. I quit trying cause he just gets mad and starts crying. Every now and then I will try again. I've gotten to his level, I've tried putting him on my belly, and tried putting a boppy or something soft under him and nope its not happening. I feel like I have failed, like he is never going to learn to roll over or crawl. Any suggestions?

Re: tummy time!

  • It sounds like you've tried it all but I am most successful when he is in a good mood - about 15 minutes after eating (so he won't spit up everywhere) but he is still happy and energetic. The mornings are also best for him.

All that to say that he would still cry regularly every time after a couple minutes until a couple weeks ago. One day he just decided it wasn't horrible. He now lasts about ten or fifteen minutes before getting fussy as long as he stays entertained with toys.

  • I "bribe" mine with the tv. He always turns his head to watch tv if it's on. Normally during the day if he won't stop I just turn the tv off except during tummy time. I put him on the floor close enough to the tv so that he has to liftt his head up to see it. Works like a charm. Once he's been there for a few minutes I distract him with his own toys and talk to him. He is normally on his tummy for a good 10 to 15 minutes without fussing. After he starts fussing I would try to show him how to roll over. Yesterday I walked out of the room for about 2 minutes and came back to a baby that was laying on his back. I guess our "practicing" paid off. I was sad that I didn't get to see it though.

  • My lo hates it as well. But now that shee is rolling over I find that she tolerates it more because she puts herself on her tummy. I think the fact thT she does it herself makes it easier for her.

  • I also use ths tv as a wY to coax her as well.

  • I have one twin that doesn't mind it and one that hates it. I just put her down on her tummy over and over. I usually do it about 10 times a day. Sometimes she starts screaming immediately, sometimes she waits about a minute before she flips out. But within the past week I've noticed that the times that she doesn't get upset right away, she can sometimes last up to 5 minutes. She lasts the longest when she can see herself in the mirror. Keep trying!

  • I have had better success when I put her down on her back and guide her to roll over onto her tummy (she doesn't roll yet) and then dangle her favorite toys back and forth in front of her. She tolerates about 5 minutes so I try to do it more then once a day but once is better then nothing!

  • Stick with it I was feeling the same way you are. I started putting DS down for about 1 minute a couple of times throughout the day. He hated it, all he did was sit there with his head down crying but after a few days he started getting used to it and wanting to stay on his tummy a little longer. Now he loves it and prefers to play on his tummy rather than on his back. Keep putting the toys out in front of him, my DS likes when I roll balls in front of him and also likes when I put a mirror down so he can stare at himself.
