Baby Haley is here... but in the NICU

Hi All-

My little girl was born on 2/21 at 10:39 pm.  She weighed in at 9 lbs, 12 oz and was 21.5 inches long.  I was induced at 40 weeks and 6 days.  I did manage to deliver her naturally and without any tearing which has made the recovery quite a bit easier than with my son where I had a second degree tear.

Unfortunately, she has been having trouble with her glucose.  The NICU doctors think that I may have had an undiagnosed case of GD toward the end of the pregnancy and that she was getting too much sugar from me.  Now her body is producing too much insulin and apparently this just takes some time to regulate.  She is doing well but will likely be in there a few more days.  Frankly, I'm kind of irritated with my OB practice.  They did find sugar in my urine a few weeks ago and kind of brushed it off without much more investigation because I had sugary cereal that morning and then let me go a week past my due date.  I feel like they let this happen and right now am just playing momma bear and wanting to blame someone for my baby being in the NICU and not snuggling in my room with me.  I am going to be discharged tomorrow but Haley will likely need to stay another few days until she can wean off of the IV they have her on.

Sorry for the ramble, but just needed to vent.

  • Wow I am impressed you delivered her naturally without tearing!!  Way to go!  I just wanted to say that my baby was in the NICU for 9 days with IV until she could regulate her own sugar ... we had the opposite problem, not enough sugar.  Anyway, it wasn't fun, but it is easy to keep it all in perspective when you see some of the other problems the babies there have.  One doctor told me sugar regulation is the most common reason babies get sent to NICU and that you just have to have patience.  She will eventually regulate on her own and be home and the NICU will seem like forever ago!  Stay strong!

  • They think I had undiagnosed GD too.  My boy was born a month early and was 7 lb 2.5 oz.  He spent 10 days in NICU.  Although his blood sugars came out fine when he was born, he had several other symptoms of GD and was huge for a month early.

  • Congrats on your little girls arrival. I'm sorry you'r having to deal with this. My LO was in the ISCN (thank God they could keep her there the NICU is at another hospital 3 miles away >.<) for several reasons but the biggest concern at first was her glucose wouldn't stay up. I was diabetic and in pretty damn good control of it and she still had to do a sugar water IV. The plus side- she was well cared for and it put my mind at ease to know if she crashed or something there was tons of people and equipment around to help versus if she was in my room.

That being said it SUCKED. I missed entire shifts of nurses in the PP department because I was in her nursery room so much. (Private nursery rooms for ISCN babies is really nice) They ended up discharging her same day as me (Three days PP as I had a c-section) But offered to let us hole up in her room until she was discharged if it came to that. Perhaps you could work something like that out? I hope she gets discharged soon or that they let you stay with her- T&P from my little family.
