DD is a little over 3 weeks old. We tried introducing a bottle of BM to her last evening for the first time. We used a slow-flow nipple, warmed the milk and the nipple up before giving it to her, and I stayed out of the room while DH tried the bottle.
It was terrible. She hardly took any of the milk- not even half an ounce. She cried the whole time and sounded like she was gagging sometimes (I have oversupply and overactive letdown, so I can't imagine the milk was coming faster than what she's used to). Finally DH stopped trying, and I came in to feed her. For her next two nursing sessions, she ate a little, and then just started crying again. It was like she wanted to latch on, but then when she did, she'd come right off (is this what they mean by nipple confusion?). She cried for the better part of 3 hours. The only good thing about all this is that she completely wore herself out and slept AWESOME overnight, with no problems nursing.
So now I'm at a loss. Should we try a different nipple? When should we try again? I'm terrified to even try it again because I don't want another night like last night, but I need her to take a bottle eventually! Any advice to help this go smoother? (I also posted this on the Breastfeeding board.)
Re: XP- First bottle = disaster
I've been there, the choking, gagging, kicking, screaming...dd is now 11.5 weeks. I go back to work in two weeks so she needs to take a bottle. Yesterday was the first time in 6 WEEKS that she actually drank (sucked) from the bottle! I had tried two different sippy cups (per pedi and LC recommendations), and the following bottles--avent, playtex drop ins, tommee tippee, dr. brown's, and similac. i was at bru and bought a Lansinoh bottle, actually thinking it was the medela bottle I've heard people talk about. Well she took it first try! I was crying with joy.
Prior to that when she'd need a bottle we would use the playtex drop ins with a medium flow nipple and squirted in a little at a time have her swallow and repeat. It took us about 30 mins for 2 oz. I've also used plastic medicine cups and fed her that way (just for practice, it worked but I was not comfortable having other people do this).
maybe look on kellymom.com for extra help too.
