Internal Fetal Moniter Question..

FTM here & while on our hospital tour, the nurse leading the tour mentioned that it was their standard practice to switch from external monitoring (belly belts same as NST) to internal monitoring after your water breaks. I've heard a little about these & was a little surprised. Since I've been reading & researching. I've learned that these are typically only used when there are fears of the baby's heart rate etc. Then I was trying to figure out how exactly they are applied to the baby's scalp. Any tips here? I'm prepared to refuse this thing unless it is absolutely necessary.  Wise? Lame FTM mistake/fear?

TIA

Re: Internal Fetal Moniter Question..

  • They may have meant just a probe that monitors contractions, but it sounds like they were talking about the scalp monitor which has little barbs to attach to baby. You're not wrong to be concerned if this is common practice. I would refuse unless there was some risk or concern that warranted it. You may need to get clarification.

  • That seems very, very odd to me. I would do a little research first, and be ready to accept in the even you NEED one but yes, not something I think I would be ok with for no valid reason.

  • I had this with my lo I was on pitocin and wasn't progressing... Wound up having a c section... I don't think it's harmful at all to the baby, I was pretty out of it but I thought it was just stuck on the baby's head not in the head or anything.

  • They did it with Ds and it was not a big deal at all.  I think it was during the time that they were worried about my oxygen level and there were some dips during contractions that caused some concern.
  • The scalp electrode itself is just a very thin, tiny curled wire that can attach to baby's scalp and record the exact heart rate. I've never seen them "routinely" placed... only if we were having a hard time watching baby's heart rate with the external monitor, or if baby's heart rate was repeatedly dropping. I would ask your OB or MW what indications they use for placement of internal monitors... (in my opninion, if it is not necessary, don't go putting a wire directly from the outside into the inside! reduce possibilities of infection, unless interventions are indicated, eh?)

  • Thank   you everyone! I spoke with our Lamaze teacher today who is also a current L&D nurse at the hospital we are delivering at & she said it was something they used on high risk mommies. I would fall under that so we'll see..
