DD has reflux and her pediatrician said that we could mix some rice in with her breast milk, in the bottle, and that might help. but at 3 months i feel like its a little early to start adding in the rice. plus, a couple weeks ago i was told that rice and cerial is associated with children and adults who are overweight. i know i know, i cant beleive what i see on tv. but still, i have to wonder. has anyone else heard of that? i know that when adults eat a lot of carbs (like rice) and lead a sedintary lifestyle (like an infant) they can gain weight. do you think that 3 months is too early to iintroduce rice? has anyone ever used rice to help with reflux? she also told us to feed her every two hours, but ive always been told to feed on demand, not on a schedule.... its also quite difficult to feed every two hours and get anything else done. just wondering how everyone feels about this stuff.
Re: adding rice?
We've added rice to DD's formula since birth. It's not a big deal--it only thickens the formula a small amount (it is really not noticeable, although you may need to change nipples), so it's not like she will be eating cereal. It REALLY does help with the reflux. Don't worry about her getting overweight--again, it's not like you will be feeding her a bowl of cereal. And plus isn't it better that she's not puking up everything she eats?
Don't worry about it--just follow your pedi's instructions.
I would much rather have some rice in my baby's pumped bottle than the alternative to give her weighted formula. I would also be more worried about her not gaining weight from reflux than the small amount of sugar rice is going to give her.
eta Did he offer her meds? Prevacid helped us- the weighted formula helped more though.
Reflux sucks.BTDT
